Where I am from, the elderly and the disabled persons do not benefit from a proper medical follow-up. This is often due to the lack of financial means or sometimes some traditional and cultural beliefs that encourage those persons either to self-isolate in villages, or remain in a familial setup under an untrained surveillance. Arrived in the U.S., I thought the situation of elderly and disabled persons did not exist but unfortunately, expensive care in specialized institution or at home might be the most efficient solution.
However, scientists from the US national Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health and many others, have demonstrated several times the benefits of service animals in the wellbeing of the disabled people and the seniors. In order to make a contribution to the resolution of this problem and thus present our ability to solve societal problems in our Senior Capstone Design Project, my teammates and I decided to prototype an autonomous robotic service animal that will be an emotional support for the elderly and disabled persons.
Fun fact: This is one of the first project that I have implemented in the United States of America and due to the COVID-19 Pandemics we were obliged to present it online. A special article has been published in the university website click here to visit
