Hello! Welcome to the Lufkin Road Middle School Band Program!
Ryan Wing is the Director of Bands at Lufkin Road Middle School. Mr. Wing is the Fine Arts Department Chair at Lufkin Road Middle School and serves as the WCPSS Middle School All-County Honor Band Clinic Chair. He grew up in Holly Springs, NC and is an alumnus of the Lufkin Road Middle School Band Program.
Mr. Wing completed his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from The University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2023. While in Utah, his primary conducting teachers were Dr. Rebekah Daniel, Dr. Don Peterson, and Dr. Brian Sproul. During his time at The University of Utah, Mr. Wing was a performing member of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Marching Utes, Utah Philharmonia and various chamber groups. He served as Drum Major for the Marching Utes for 4 years, including 2 performances in the "Tournament of Roses" Parade and "Rose Bowl" Game in 2022 and 2023.
As a conductor, Mr. Wing actively participates in conducting symposia throughout the United States. He has worked with notable conductors such as: Dr. Travis Cross, Mr. Jerry Junkin, Dr. Donald McKinney, Mr. Allan McMurray, Dr. Kevin Sedatole, Dr. William Staub, Dr. Mallory Thompson, Dr. David Thorton, and Dr. Emily Threinen.
Mr. Wing’s bands earn Superior ratings at the North Carolina Bandmasters Association Music Performance Adjudication. The Lufkin Road Middle School Symphonic Band was recently invited to perform at the Music for All Southeastern Regional Concert Festival hosted by Georgia State University in March of 2026. In 2025, the Lufkin Road Middle School Symphonic Band performed at the Music for All Mid-Atlantic Concert Band Festival at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Mr. Wing was recently awarded the "Young Director Award of Excellence" by the North Carolina Bandmasters Association East Central District. Mr. Wing was also a 2025 recipient of the "Ed Rooker ENCORE Award" presented by the North Carolina Chapter of the American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA).
Under Mr. Wing's direction, the Lufkin Road Band Program frequently participates in commission and consortium opportunities for the young wind band. In May of 2025, the Lufkin Road Middle School Symphonic Band gave the world premiere of Tyler S. Grant's "Arc of the Storm", dedicated to the 25th Anniversary of Lufkin Road Middle School. Recent and future artistic collaborations include Katherine Bergman, Steven Bryant, and Tyler S. Grant.
Mr. Wing’s professional affiliations include the North Carolina Bandmasters Association, North Carolina Music Educators Association, National Band Association, and National Association for Music Education.
Before Mr. Wing's appointment at Lufkin Road, he completed his student teaching at Ligon GT Magnet Middle School in Raleigh, NC under the direction of Ms. Renee Todd. Mr. Wing maintains an active Clarinet studio in the Triangle area and performs as a clarinetist in the Triangle Wind Ensemble.
Mr. Wing loves being back home at Lufkin Road, a program that holds a special place in his heart. Go Lightning and Go BAND!
