Ludic Pedagogy: The Edited Collection
We are currently in the process of putting together an open-access book of research-based practices, case studies, activities, reflections, thought pieces, and conceptual pieces, among other contexts, that apply the Ludic Pedagogy model in higher education. The book will identify specific instances and/or contexts in which fun, play, playfulness, and/or positivity have been employed in higher education courses and classrooms.
The hope is that the book will be ready for distribution by autumn 2026, so continue to watch this space!
Ludic Pedagogy: THE BOOK!
While the world is (literally) on fire with climate change, the pain of war is palpable, and a global pandemic still is not over, we have... written a book on having more fun in higher education. It may seem an ironic time to take on this work. But we know that it is important to find community, solve problems, and work together to find joy in places where we may not expect it. Ludic Pedagogy - the incorporation of fun, play, playfulness, and positivity in education - brings a sense of creativity, connection, and hope to the college and university experience.
Our book is published by Rowman & Littlefield as Ludic Pedagogy: A Seriously Fun Way to Teach and Learn. When students play, experience humour, engage with games, and learn in a positive environment, they retain information and concepts better, are more likely to stay enrolled in higher education, and enjoy the learning experience, among other powerful benefits. We're setting out to help educators and students do this, and do it well.
We have included anecdotes and stories from friends and colleagues in this book. We have illustrated how instructors employ any of the elements of Ludic Pedagogy (fun, play, playfulness, positivity) into class. These brief accounts will serve as examples to our readers. We obviously have many of our own examples of how we do fun stuff, but have referenced our friends around the world, the fun things that you do, how you make it happen, and how your students respond.
You can find the book at the publisher's website here: https://www.bloomsbury.com/ca/ludic-pedagogy-9798765175170/ (and at all your finer bookstores).
Thank you for sharing how you embody fun, play, playfulness, and positivity. The world is a better place for it.
