Character Designs:

These first 3 pages are some of the process pages I made for a character I designed called Mara. To start, I made a mood board as a way of idea dumping and to get some inspiration for outfit ideas. Then, I moved on to designing her main outfit, which is the design in page 1. This was the first page I ever drew of Mara, so I was also experimenting with colour schemes and her face and hairstyle. I wanted it to show that she's a rebellious character through her outfit and design, so I made her look quite unapproachable and tough.
Then, I made a more detailed face study page (page 3). This helped me when I was redrawing her lots and made sure she looked like the same person in each drawing. To do this I made a very blocky sketch of the planes of her face. This way I had a more clear understanding of the structure of her face and where all the shadows and highlights should be.
After that, I experimented with more outfit designs (page 2). I wanted to design a more everyday outfit to contrast the other one, so I used the mood board I made before to get more ideas and I sketched out some of my favourite ones.
I decided to use the design on the far right of page 2, as I felt like it had the best balance of the colours, and also had the best contrast between tight clothes and baggy/ loose clothes. My work on this character was influenced and inspired by the latest Spiderverse Spiderman film, as well as some of the Spiderman comic books.
I made all of these sketches and illustrations in Adobe Photoshop.
Here is a character I designed for a game idea and story I had. It's my goal to create my own finished game one day, and this is my starting point. Her design is heavily inspired by the video game Horizon Zero Dawn.
Horizon is the whole reason I want to work in the video game industry. It set fire to my passion for games and made me appreciate concept art and character design more than I had before. This character design was the first design I made while learning Game Development, so she holds a very special place in my heart and will always be one of my favourites.
I also used this as a chance to experiment with a new art style, and I tried using blocky colours with halftones to shade. I wanted to try and capture the comic book feel. I made this in photoshop.
Illustrations:
This is an introduction illustration I made for the character I talked about earlier, Mara. I wanted to explore her personality through the pose and perspective. This was also my first time using a fish-eye perspective.
This illustration was made using Photoshop.
On top of my Game Design course, I'm also doing an additional A-Level in graphic communication. This was my mock exam piece for that class. The brief was to take a photo of ourselves, create a background and edit the photo so that it fits into our theme. My theme is inspired by games like Cyberpunk, as well as films like Blade Runner, and I wanted to capture that in my art. I used a lot of neon signs and created a glitching hologram effect over the image of myself to create a futuristic and dystopian feel to the final illustration.
The images on the far right show the process of creating this illustration. I made this using Photoshop.
Reference Studies:
Here is a reference study page I made to practice drawing different types of faces and different angles. I found pictures on Pinterest that I found appealing, and sketched them out in my sketchbook. Then I moved them into Photoshop and sketched over it. I did this to add more depth and make certain areas stand out more.
