The field that I have taken interest in at the moment is Electrical Engineering. Electrical Engineering has started to pique my interest after it was a primary factor in my Independent Engineering Project. During my Project I dealt with a lot of electromagnetism and electrical circuits, it was interesting and I gained a fondness with the subject after researching it for so long. Electrical Engineering is very on demand field in MD; where there a several opportunities specifically for Electrical Engineering students offered here to increase the probability of them staying in the county. Therefore it is not unreasonable to consider it a promising and reliable career option. I've always known I wanted to choose an engineering path, as the concept of “Thinking Outside the Box”, innovating, and improving systems has always been fascinating to me. It's exciting to know that I can look at something in a different perspective, and my outlook could ultimately change how already established systems operate. Being able to do all of these things with the label of “Engineer” is something I desire.
I have not committed to a specific engineering career path. Nevertheless, change is inevitable; as the variable of time is constant. Due to this factor, I strive to obtain opportunities that could prove beneficial in the future. Nothing is set in stone, therefore I take every chance I get to excel. For example, I choose to focus on taking classes related to stem majors. If I continue on my path I will be able to take the majority of the AP sciences, and reach the highest level of math given at my high school; AP Calculus-BC. In my search for a career that I can put my trust in, I've taken the executive decision to take on the engineering program at Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center, this decision will help me pinpoint the career path that I will be able to make a future out of. Through my time at Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center I've learned copious amounts of invaluable knowledge and information. for example time management, independent workstyles, the EDP, and various different stem related pathways. apart form soft skills, we have also earned various certification through this program like NC3, and AutoCAD certifications.
I've taken many extracurriculars to expand my visible career options. For example in middle school I participated in an after school math club, where I later joined a MATHCOUNTS competition. Although I wasn't in the top 10, the experience was like no other, it was my first time in a designated competitive environment. I was introduced to a variety of people who all worked hard to get to their current place. It was the first time I was surrounded by a group of people who were able to put forth the same amount of effort that I was willing to. Their capabilities inspired me to strive for a goal of my own. Outside of school I'm in the junior Optimist Club, a non-profit community service group. We arrive at events selling food and drinks, with the profit we give back to our community in St. Mary's country, for example women's shelters, and veterans homes. This experience has helped me understand people’s perspectives and struggles, which will ultimately be beneficial as I am now more adjusted to identifying systematic problems. Due to focusing on academics, I am not employed.
After High school I hope to be accepted into a good 4-year university- the placeholder currently being UMD, going into higher education has always been a dream of mine due to being a first generation Mexican-American. I aspire to be well respected in my field. My plan is not final, and I do hope it will change in time to best suit the career choice that I will follow, for example going to UMD, or gaining experience in my field to climb the ranks. along these lines of potentially pursuing a career of electrical engineering, CSM has a good electrical engineering transfer program from CSM to UMD. Which is where I could first get my associates degree at CSM, then transfer to UMD afterwards, saving money in the process. Although I am a family-oriented person at heart, my academics and career come first, the place of my higher education is not as important as the quality of the education I will be receiving.
Supposing I achieve being an electrical engineer, I hope that I will be able to make new designs and systems, or just simply working a respectable job. I strive to be able to make a difference in the world with my future work. Once I achieve my dream, I will hopefully be financially stable enough to give back to the community that has helped me become the person that I will become. I hope my work will inspire generations younger than me, specifically other Mexican-Americans to pursue their own dreams, making a positive difference around themselves and their community.
