For this lesson, I used the Nearpod presentation app to put together a lesson about the legislative branch in the U.S. government. For this lesson, I used a variety of tools from audio, video, mini quiz, and open-ended questions for the students to use. The lesson follows the NC American History standard, CL.C&G.2: Analyze the roles of the branches of government at the federal, state, and local levels. This lesson helps facilitate learning by allowing the students to view the content at their own pace. This lesson is designed for a 10th-grade civics class which is why I wanted to include more open-ended questions so that they can give their own opinion on what they are learning. Using Nearpod allows me to use a variety of tools from embedded video questions, to drawing, and the ability for students to record an audio version of their answers instead of typing it out. If a student struggles with typing or has the inability to do so they can record answers in audio form which can be submitted to the teacher. Using Nearpod allows me to structure my lessons to best support each individual student's needs or the type of learning that best suits them.
For this project, I created a Google Forms quiz on the Judiciary Branch of the U.S. government. I used graphics, videos, short answers, multiple choice, and True or False questions within this quiz. I used the NC American History standard, CL.C&G.2: Analyze the roles of the branches of government at the federal, state, and local levels. This tool uses the Analyst standard of the ISTE standards because it allows me to collect their answers and see if I need to review certain topics if they are missed. This quiz is for a 10th-grade civics class so I put questions in the quiz that required them to have a broader understanding of the topic. Using this tool allows me to see how well my students are retaining the content I'm teaching in my class and it allows me to see if I need to review any of the content students are struggling with. This tool allows learners to test themselves on the knowledge they have received and see if they need to work on anything before the unit test. Google Forms allows me to create the quiz to best suit specific student's needs by allowing me to use a variety of tools.
Narakeet Video and Graphic Organizer
For this project, I made a presentation through Narakeet and a graphic organizer to go along with it to help the students take notes from the presentation. The NC American History standard for this lesson is CL.C&G.2: Analyze the roles of the branches of government at the federal, state, and local levels. This project follows two ISTE standards which are Learner and Designer. The presentation was originally made by me as well as the graphic organizer which follows the designer standard of ISTE. If not able to be in the class that day, Narakeet can make a short video of the presentation I have put together which will allow the students to hear and read the content. The graphic organizer is a way for students to organize their notes into different sections for them. These tools will allow me to be prepared for any circumstances that may prevent me from being in the classroom to deliver the instruction. The Narakeet allows students with visual or hearing disabilities to still receive the content by allowing the use of narration and the use of subtitles during the video. If a students learns at a slower pace I can make them a video presentation for them to look back on and go through at their own pace.
