The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as Global Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
These 17 goals are integrated—they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others and that development must balance social, economic, and environmental sustainability (United Nations [UN], 2015).
The 17 Goals for a Better World
1. No Poverty
The primary objective is to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. While extreme poverty rates fell by more than half between 1990 and 2015, the 2025 Sustainable Development Goals Report indicates that over 800 million people remain trapped in extreme poverty, exacerbated by slow and uneven pandemic recovery (UN, 2025).
2. Zero Hunger
This goal aims to end hunger, achieve food security, and improve nutrition. Progress has been hampered by climate change and conflict; 2024 was recorded as the hottest year on record, which continues to impact global grain yields and food distribution systems (UN, 2025).
3. Good Health and Well-Being
Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being at all ages is vital. Notable successes include a 40% decline in new HIV infections since 2010 and the elimination of neglected tropical diseases in 54 countries as of early 2025 (UN, 2025).
4. Quality Education
This goal ensures inclusive and equitable quality education. Since 2015, an additional 110 million children and youth have entered the school system, though disparities remain in conflict-affected regions (UN, 2025).
5. Gender Equality
Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls is a core pillar. Currently, women hold 27% of parliamentary seats worldwide, an increase from 22% in 2015, yet they still perform 2.5 times more unpaid care work than men (UN, 2025).
6. Clean Water and Sanitation
This involves ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. As of 2025, universal access remains a challenge, particularly in rapidly urbanizing areas where infrastructure lags behind population growth.
7. Affordable and Clean Energy
The goal is to ensure access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy. By 2023, 92% of the world's population had access to electricity, with renewable energy becoming the fastest-rising source of power globally (UN, 2025).
8. Decent Work and Economic Growth
This goal promotes sustained, inclusive economic growth and productive employment. A key focus remains on reducing youth unemployment and closing the gender pay gap.
9. Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
Building resilient infrastructure and fostering innovation is essential. Internet use grew significantly to 68% in 2024, up from 40% in 2015, bridging the digital divide for millions (UN, 2025).
10. Reduced Inequalities
Reducing inequality within and among countries remains a "stark reality" of the 2025 assessment, as soaring debt and systemic disadvantages continue to hold back marginalized communities (UN, 2025).
11. Sustainable Cities and Communities
This goal aims to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable through better urban planning and public transport.
12. Responsible Consumption and Production
Ensuring sustainable consumption patterns involves reducing waste and the sustainable management of natural resources.
13. Climate Action
Urgent action is required to combat climate change. Recent data shows carbon dioxide levels are at their highest in over two million years, and global temperatures have surpassed the 1.5°C threshold (UN, 2025).
14. Life Below Water
Conserving and sustainably using the oceans and marine resources is critical for global food security and climate regulation.
15. Life on Land
This goal focuses on protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, including forests and biodiversity.
16. Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
Promoting peaceful and inclusive societies has become more difficult; by 2025, over 120 million people have been forced from their homes due to conflict, more than double the number in 2015 (UN, 2025).
17. Partnerships for the Goals
The final goal emphasizes the need for a revitalized global partnership to achieve the previous 16 goals through shared technology, finance, and capacity building.
As the 2030 deadline approaches, the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2025 calls for "urgent multilateralism." While millions of lives have improved through better access to education and electricity, the pace of change in areas like climate action and poverty reduction must accelerate to meet the global commitments (UN, 2025).
