How to lower blood sugar naturally
Blood sugar and/or diabetes can be controlled by eating well, exercising, and managing your stress level. I speak from experience, my fasting blood sugar in December of 2019 was 385 (normal should be under 100). My A1C was 13.2 (normal is under 5.7). Clearly, I had a serious issue. There is a history of diabetes in my family, both on my mother’s side as well as my father’s side of the family.
I didn’t want to rely on pharmaceutical drugs, so I decided to find a holistic approach. I found 3 books as my guidance to bring my A1C from 13.2 to 5.9 by May of 2020. That’s right I dropped my A1C to within normal limits in 5 months!!!!! When I started out, I didn’t know what I should eat and what I shouldn’t!
When I went for my check up my doctor could not believe how quickly my blood sugars normalized. She asked me what happened and I said “diet and exercise”. She couldn’t believe it. In the 30 years I’ve know my doctor, I’ve never seen her flabbergasted, and she was just that – flabbergasted. At the bottom of this article, I will give you a list of the books and other resources I used to bring my blood sugar down.
First and foremost, food plays a critical role in managing blood sugar levels. I fortunately love all fruits and vegetables, so managing my blood sugar was easy and pleasurable.
Fruits- Fresh or Frozen – Berries, wild blueberries, bananas, apples, oranges, grapefruit, mangoes, grapes, etc. If you don’t peel the fruit then choose organic if possible, like berries and grapes.
Starchy type vegetables – white potatoes, colored potatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, turnip, etc.
Legumes – Beans, lentils, peas, chickpeas
Whole grains – brown rice, quinoa, etc.
Classic vegetables – CELERY!, asparagus, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, onions, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, mushrooms, etc.
Leafy greens – Especially dark leafy greens like spinach and kale
Herbs – herbs are important and some are more beneficial for helping control blood sugar levels – see herbal supplement below
Processed foods, bakery products, ice cream, dairy products, sugar, and other artificial sweeteners.
Animal products! Yes, you read that right. Contrary to popular belief, animal products and foods that are higher in fat contribute to insulin resistance and should be minimized. This includes nuts, coconut meat, avocados, pastas, gluten products, soy products, eggs, and fermented food.
Action plan to lower blood sugar
1. Daily food intake should be 90% from the list of “food to lower blood sugar”. Eat animal products only once per day or a few times a week. Follow a low fat diet.
2. Drink lots of water, add lemon, lime, strawberries, watermelon or your favorite fruit to the water. Herbal teas (non sweetened) or seltzer water.
3. Exercise – get 30 minutes of walking, biking, swimming or other exercise to get your heart rate up. Side note – my blood sugar would drop fast after exercising – sometimes as much as 60 points.
4. Build muscle with exercises like light weight dumb bells, exercise bands, kettle bells
5. Test your blood levels with a blood glucose meter
6. Take herbal supplements that assist your body with lowering blood glucose levels.
