Louis Rosenberg, PhD is a technologist, inventor, and writer in the fields of artificial intelligence, mixed reality, and haptics. His research focus for the last decade has been on the development of Collective Superintelligence - the use of AI to significantly amplify the real-time intelligence for networked human groups [ref].
Early in his career, Rosenberg pioneered mixed reality at Air Force Research Laboratory by developing the Virtual Fixtures platform (1991-94) [ref]. It was the first system to enable users to interact with a mixed reality of real and virtual objects. In the field of haptics, he developed the first haptic mouse & GUI for mainstream computing (1993-99) [ref]. In the field of AI, he developed Artificial Swarm Intelligence, a biologically inspired technology that aims to connect human groups into a Collective Superintelligence using methods modeled on natural swarms. He gave a popular TEDx talk on Swarm AI in 2017.
Rosenberg is a longtime entrepreneur. He founded the early virtual reality company Immersion Corporation in 1993 and brought it public on NASDAQ in 1999. He left in 2002 and founded Outland Research, early developer of augmented reality technologies acquired by Google in 2011. Outland pioneered a range of AR technologies including spatially registered notes and reminders. And in 2014 Rosenberg founded Unanimous AI which works to amplify human intelligence using biologically inspired networks.
Rosenberg is a vocal advocate of AI regulation and writes often about the risks and needed protections. He has a new book entitled Our Next Reality (2024) from Hachette focuses on the need to protect society against real-time AI manipulation. His previous books on the impacts of AI include Arrival Mind (2020), Monkey Room (2014) and UPGRADE (2012). He also wrote the short film Privacy Lost (2023) about the danger of AI manipulation.
