Louis Rosenberg, PhD is an American computer scientist, research engineer, inventor and bestselling author in the fields of AI, mixed reality, collective intelligence and haptics. Since 2014, his research focus has been on developing Collective Superintelligence - the use of AI to amplify the intelligence of networked human groups to superhuman levels [ref].
Early in his career, Dr Rosenberg pioneered mixed reality at Air Force Research Laboratory where he created the Virtual Fixtures platform (1991-94) [ref]. It was the first augmented reality system to enable users to interact with real and virtual objects. Over the years since he has been awarded over 300 patents for a wide range of technologies.
Rosenberg is also known for inventing the first haptic mouse and haptic GUI for personal computing (1993-97) [ref, ref] and the first haptic touchscreen (1998) for phones and tablets [ref]. In the field of AI, he developed Artificial Swarm Intelligence (Swarm AI) to connect large human groups into real-time superintelligent systems (2014-2024) [ref].
Rosenberg is a longtime entrepreneur. He founded the early virtual reality company Immersion Corporation in 1993 and brought it public on NASDAQ. He left in 2002 and founded Outland Research, early developer of augmented reality technologies acquired by Google in 2011. Outland pioneered a range of AR technologies including spatial notes and reminders and the first AR media player. In 2014 Rosenberg founded Unanimous AI to amplify the intelligence of human groups using methods modeled on biological swarms.
Rosenberg is a vocal advocate of AI regulation and writes often about the risks and protections. In his new book, Our Next Reality (2024) from Hachette, he describes the need to protect society against real-time AI manipulation. His previous books on the impacts of AI include Arrival Mind (2020), Monkey Room (2014) and UPGRADE (2012). He also wrote the short film Privacy Lost (2023) about the danger of AI manipulation.
