Chief Election Officer
Responsible for the overall management of the precinct. Ensures that voting is proceeding in a calm and orderly fashion, assigns duties to election officers, ensure that all paperwork is properly completed. Assists with voter issues and communicates with the Office of Elections as needed.
Election Officers offered this role typically include those that have served in several elections, prefferably as an Assistant Chief in at least one election.
Assistant Chief Election Officer
Responsible for helping the Chief Election Officer with the management of the precinct. Fully trained to take over management of the precinct in the event that the Chief cannot serve. Frequently serves as a backup Help Desk or Technology Officer in the precinct, and fills in to ensure election officers get their breaks and lunches.
Election Officers offered this role typically include those that have served in at least one election, with preference given to those who have Help Desk or Technology Specialist training.
Help Desk Certified Officer
Responsible for taking care of voters who require advanced assistance. Communicates with the Office of Elections as needed throughout the day to ensure all voters are properly taken care of. This role will be assigned to someone who has obtained 'Help Desk Certification'.
Election Officers offered this role are typically recommended by the Chief Election Officer or express an interest to staff.
Assisted by the SDR Officer when possible.
Technology Certified Officer
Responsible for ensuring that all technology is set up and functioning properly prior to precinct opening. Troubleshoots issues with technology throughout the day and communicates with the Office of Elections as needed. Ensures that all equipment is properly closed at end of voting and returned to the office securely. This role will be assigned to someone who has obtained 'Technology Certification.'
Election Officers offered this role are typically recommended by the Chief Election Officer or express an interest to staff.
Election Officers
Election officers are the backbone of elections! They are asked to serve in many different roles throughout the day. In some precincts, election officers serve in the same role all day, but in many, they rotate so that they can get some experience doing different things. Here are the roles an election officer may be asked to serve :
Greeter - the first person a voter sees! Helps voters ensure they are in the right place and find their way. May be asked to receive mail ballots that are dropped off.
Check-in Officer - responsible for verifying voter ID and checking voters in when they appear to vote.
SDR Officer- responsible for ensuring all Same Day Registration Provisional Envelopes are completed fully by both voters and Election Officers. Help Desk Certified Officers are responsible for identifying who is and is not eligible to vote Same Day Registration.
Ballot Officer - responsible for issuing ballots to voters after they are checked in and ensuring that ballots are secure and properly reconciled at all times.
Voting Booth Officer - responsible for assisting voters with finding a booth, clearing literature, and serving as an overall guide through the polling place.
Scanner Officer - responsible for ensuring voter ballots are accepted by the machine and helping voters with issues. May be asked to issue the all- important 'I Voted' stickers.
Absentee Drop Bag Officer- responsible for holding the Absentee Drop Bag and occasionally helps with curbside voting!
