Song Sets I Play On Guitar By The Who
During the mid 1970’s, I regularly listened to music by The Who on LP vinyl records. In particular, ‘Tommy’, ‘Who’s Next’, ‘Quadrophenia’, and ‘The Who by Numbers’. In 1975 I saw the movie, ‘Tommy’ in quadraphonic sound at a movie theatre along the Atlantic Ocean in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I also saw The Who in concert on 11 March 1976 at the Madison Square Garden in New York. I was 14 then, and I became quite fascinated and inspired by the way Pete Townshend, songwriter and guitarist in The Who, played guitar. Pete Townshend's style of guitar playing, both rhythm and lead guitar, are impressive to me. So, I took private guitar lessons and minored in music and drama in high school. With regular practice, I learned to play on acoustic guitar a few excerpts from the original 1969, ‘Tommy’ by The Who, such as ‘Overture’,’ Amazing Journey’, and ‘Pinball Wizard’ when I was around 15.
Eventually, I learned to play the entire rock opera. Between the years 2001 and 2002, I finally had the opportunity to further my guitar studies, as I acquired the sheet music to the entire collection of songs by The Who and the double CD (compact disc),’ Tommy’. From the 4 booklets of sheet music, ‘The Who Definitive Guitar Recorded Version' and the original 1969 Tommy recorded on CD (compact disc), I learned to play all 24 compositions from ‘Tommy’.

I play from the sheet music in The Who Definitive Collection guitar recorded version along with The Who's original albums. There are many songs from The Who I enjoy playing.

I chose to play The Who's Tommy on guitar, which for me is a challenging composition to learn, for actually several reasons. Not only did I especially like Tommy, I also really enjoy classical music, orchestra music and rock music. To me, Tommy seemed to contain all of these genres of the music I loved. And it could be played on an acoustic guitar so easily.
