The Indiana Immunization Coalition exists to reduce the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases through immunization education, advocacy, promotion and statewide collaborative partnerships.
Primary Responsibilities
While working at the Indiana Immunization Coalition, my primary responsibilities included preparing patient documents prior to mobile clinics, organizing documents in office for easier future access, and assist at mobile clinics to check patients in and out, gather insurance information and suggest additional vaccines that may be required based on State databases.
Projects
During my time at Indiana Immunization Coalition, I worked on the Silent Auction which is IIC's yearly charity event. The purpose of the silent auction is to raise funds to be able to continue to provide resources for Indiana residents. I reached out to 300+ organizations in the State of Indiana to donate as well as understand IIC's mission.
Learning Objectives
Upon starting my internship a few goals I set for myself were to network and make connections that would be beneficial for the future as well as learn more from those in my career field, understanding what it means to work for an non-for-profit organization, and learn what it takes to manage multiple clinics on a weekly basis.
While working at Indiana Immunization Coalition, I have learned about different insurance companies and the importance of billing insurance companies for services rendered from a non-for-profit perspective. I have learned how to manage office calendars and the importance of communication within the organization while preparing for these clinics. Before my internship ends I want to continue to work on my networking skills and how to develop professional relationships.
Personal Development:
From my experience at IIC, I improved my knowledge about health insurance and how health insurance impacts funding of a non-for-profit organization. I also learned how to utilize online databases such as VaxCare, to collect and keep track of all patient demographics and health insurance information. I also learned about the State database CHIRP that allows IIC to review all previous immunizations and anything the patient is currently qualified to receive. While working with IIC, I also improved my ability to work in a fast paced environment and understand there will always be constant changes within any organization.
In this role my main responsibility was to collect donations for IIC's end of the year silent auction. I have also helped facilitate multiple mobile clinics all over the state of Indiana, providing a wide range of vaccinations. I also prepared patient documentation prior to mobile clinics for easy access day of event.
Priotizing my day is something I am currently working to improve as I move forward in my career. Often times I had many tasks in a day such as attending mobile clincs and assignments/exams due on the same day. I would like to prioritize my tasks in a day so I am not overwhelmed, yet getting things done when expected.
Academic Connections:
During experience at IUPUI Lean Management stood out the most to me and contributed most to my thought process at my internship. With having learned what I did in lean, I always analyze a situation to see how it can be improved in a way it is beneficial for patients and employees. IIC runs mulitiple mobile vaccination clinics in one week, it is important to have a process that works for patients and employees.
