Collaborations

PAST

During my PhD project, I developed several national and international collaborations, including:

Long-standing scientific collaboration with Luigi Boitani and Anna Loy (Italy);

Scientific cooperation with António Mira (Portugal);

Molecular analyses with Petra Hájková (Czech Republic);

Fish and crayfish sampling with Maria Ilhéu (Portugal);

Otter trapping and GPS tagging with Lugaidh Ó Néill (Ireland) and Addy de Jongh (Netherlands);

Preliminary testing of Technosmart's GPS tag with Giacomo Dell'Omo;

Otter aging with Thrine Heggberget and Jiska Van Djiik (Norway);

The work for my post-doctoral research on the ecology of semiaquatic mammals at the Applied Ecology Group with Pedro Beja, my former PI, our colleagues geneticists from the CIBIO (Paulo Célio Alves, Joana Paupério, Bastian Egeter, Filipa Martins), João Cabral and Luís Braz from the University of Trás-os-Montes, Amilcar Teixeira and Paulo Cortez from the Instituto Politecnico de Bragança, and Carla Marisa Quaresma from the ICNF;

Article assessing the use of our novel software in predicting wildlife road mortality risk with coauthors Adam T. Ford and Miguel Porto;

The mathematical framework of SiMRiv's approach, elaborated with the help of Erida Gjini, a mathematician with experience in ecological modelling;

A research project proposal on cascading effects of top predators and invasive species on freshwater ecosystems, with Tim Tinker, Ronaldo Sousa and Manuel Graça;

Fostering "Bio-logging" research at CIBIO and in Portugal, with Fernando Lima, Nuno Queiroz, João Paulo Silva, Rui Seabra and Francisco Álvares;

Expedition with National Geographic Joel Sartore (credits of the pic above: ©Cole Sartore) to photograph Portuguese local fauna;

A research project proposal using otters as sentinel species for contaminant exposure to organo-halogenated compounds and mercury in Western Europe, in collaboration with Sophie Bourgeon (Norway) and other researchers.

Consultancy on otter trapping and tagging for the Wildlife Conservation Trust in India;

All the students and volunteers that I've supervised.

PRESENT

Present collaborations include:

Work as consultant for Freshwaters at ANP|WWF (Portugal), leading its program on Fluvial Barriers Removal, within the European Initiative Living European Rivers.

Participation to the Silent Cities Project - Participatory monitoring programme of an exceptional modification of urban soundscapes.

Analyses of an elk telemetry dataset for Prof Adam T. Ford lab.

Article comparing road mortality risk in terrestrial and semiaquatic carnivores, with coauthors Rafael Barrientos and Marcello D'Amico;

Species distribution models and climate change forecasting applied to semiaquatic mammals, topic of Francesca Cosentino's internship, performed in Portugal and Italy in collaboration with Márcia Barbosa, Miguel Araújo (Portugal) and Luigi Maiorano and Daniele Baisero (Italy).

FUTURE

I'm always interested in collaborating, to improve the quality and comprehensiveness of the research - as well as the fun associated with it!

And I am currently available to move everywhere in the world.

Prospective students searching for a thesis, researchers interested in my research lines wishing to collaborate for projects or papers, and PIs with open job positions that could fit me or willing to support our current studies on the interesting freshwater model system including otters, Pyrenean desmans, fish, macroinvertebrates and invasive American minks and crayfish in NE Portugal, are encouraged to contact me!

I am eager to use the data that I gathered during both my PhD and post-doc for collaborative research purposes.

One field I'd be particularly interested in working on through collaborations is movement ecology in river and heterogeneous landscapes. Together with my friend and colleague (and amazing programmer) Miguel Porto, we recently launched a new free, open acess software (the R package SiMRiv), and recently published an article divulgating it. The software is being used worldwide and downloaded massively. We're currently seeking collaborations from programmers to help us develop new software functionalities. If you can program in C language, have knowledge of R and ecology and are interested in collaborating on this please don't hesitate to contact us!
