Where do I get a kart?
There are a few avenues you can take depending on your budget. Many used karts can be found on sites like Craiglist, Racingjunk, or facebook marketplace. However you can also go through a local dealer like New England Kart Center or RPM Motorsports.
What kind of kart should I get?
While there are many different divisions to run out there. Its good to find a kart that can be run almost anywhere and for the younger drivers out there, you want a motor that will grow WITH YOU. Yes thats right, a motor that can be easily adapted to new divisions as you get older. The Briggs and Stratton LO206 motor is the perfect example of this. You can have this motor from the Age 5 long until you are in the Senior Champ division at age 15+.
Briggs and Stratton LO206 Motor Classes:
Age 5 to 8 - Rookie Champ
Age 8 to 12 - Jr. Sportsman
Age 12 to 15 - Sportsman or Jr. Champ
Age 14+ - Sr. Champ
What is an LO206 Motor?
Briggs and Stratton developed this motor program as an entry level motor for a wide range of different aged classes. The motor is sealed directly from the factory and does not allow for anyone to go in and tamper with their engines, keeping everyone on a level playing field and keeps the costs lower. These engines are very reliable and have seen some racers get 2-3 seasons out of one motor before it needs to be re-freshened.
For the younger divisions to restrict these cars from running at high speeds, they have different sized restrictor plates that can be easily changed out and are color coded to avoid confusion. When your child gets older, you easily just change out that restrictor plate to the next size and off they go.
What else do I need?
BASIC SET OF TOOLS: Socket set, wrenches, screw drivers, allen wrenches is a great starting point. You'll need some odds and ends along the way but that will get you going.
ROLLING KART STAND: This will be very helpful to you. No one likes to crawl on the ground trying to work on the kart. This keeps it at waist height and allows you to roll your kart to the grid so you arent driving your kart through the dirt pits.
TRANSPORTATION: Many teams use a pickup truck, while others have an enclosed trailer to haul their kart(s).
