Date: Saturday 28 th February 2026
Start time: 10.15 for 10.30am (Please note earlier time)
Start: Cheam station, Southern Rail - TfL Zone 5.
Meet outside (or inside) the booking hall adjacent to the down (south) platform.
Cheam is served by Southern trains from London Victoria, London Bridge, Epsom
and West Croydon. By changing at Sutton, Thameslink trains from St Pancras
International and Wimbledon can be used.
Distance: approx. 9 miles linear
Finish: New Malden station, Southwestern Railway Zone 4, at approx. 4pm. From
New Malden station, direct trains are available to Waterloo calling at Clapham
Junction (change for Victoria) and Vauxhall, or to Kingston. Alternatively, by walking
300m down New Malden High Street, the Superloop SL7 express bus can be caught
in either direction.
Description: This will be the first of two walks which will follow the route of the
Beverley Brook from Worcester Park to Putney where it joins the Thames, as do
other chalk streams such as the Wandle and the Hogsmill which the London group
has followed on previous walks. The Brook rises in Worcester Park and it partly
flows in underground channels constructed during the development of suburbia.
Before reaching the Brook’s source, we will walk through Nonsuch Park to see the
site of Henry VIII’s magnificent palace as well as passing Whitehall (a historic Tudor
timber-framed building) where Queen Elizabeth I is reputed to have held an
impromptu council meeting and signed state papers. We will stop for coffee at the
café in Nonsuch Mansion before making our way to the source in Cuddington
Recreation Ground. There follows some pavement walking to Worcester Park centre
where we will have lunch near the station and there will be opportunities to buy a
sandwich or a drink locally. Then we will continue along the Brook where possible
(using pavements and through parks) to New Malden via Motspur Park.
The walk is flat, with just 65m of ascent, and mainly along surfaced paths or
pavements. Anyone wishing to shorten the walk to 5 or 6 miles can catch a train
from Worcester Park or Motspur Park stations respectively.
General information:
1. Be ready to leave on time, with boots on;
2. Bring packed lunch and plenty to drink especially if the weather is warm;
3. Wear appropriate footwear and clothing: waterproof if a shower is likely;
4. We walk at moderate pace;
5. You take part in the event at own risk;
6. We encourage you to carry emergency contact details in case of an incident;
7. We look forward to seeing you!
Walk led by Phil and Hilary
NOTES:
Walks are usually on the 4th Saturday of the month and usually start at 11am.
There is no walk in December.
You don’t need to book to join our walks but please check you have read the information about the walk. We look forward to you joining us.
Travel
Please check train times before travelling. Engineering works can add 30 minutes or more to a journey. The National Rail Enquiries www.nationalrail.co.uk, phone 08457 484950 (Textphone 0845 6050600) is available 24 hours a day with information on train times and scheduled engineering works. For London Underground details see www.tfl.gov.uk. If coming by car please allow plenty of time for your journey and parking.
Bad Weather/Unforeseen Circumstances
We do not expect walks to be cancelled at short notice but you may wonder if a walk is going ahead if it snows. Very occasionally a walk may need to be cancelled if the leader sudden finds they are unable to be there and a replacement leader cannot be found at short notice. This has prompted us to consider how to keep you informed in such cases. In most cases an email will be sent out with an update if this happens, but we shall in future also be adding any updates in red to the programme page on the website for you to check if you are in any doubt, or do not receive the programme by email.
Walk details by email
If you provide the club's secretary at londonchristianwalkingclub@gmail.com with your email address, we will email walk details which will augment those on the website. Once you have attended one of the Group’s walks, your email address will be stored on our database solely for administration purposes. If you prefer your details not to be held in this way, please view this programme online.
Christian Walking Club – Name Change
At the AGM of the national Christian Rambling Club in May 2013, a motion was passed changing the name of the club from Christian Rambling Club to Christian Walking Club. The paper programme and the website now reflect this.
Guidance on walking speeds and finish times
Short walks (up to 7 miles) are at a gentle pace with plenty of stops and some opportunities to leave early. Main walks (7-12 miles) are at a brisker pace (approx. 2.5 mph plus lunch & coffee breaks). They may not start and end at the same place, or the route of circular walks may not allow short cuts, with limited or no opportunities to pick up public transport in the middle of the walk. We aim to finish main walks by around 5pm or dusk if earlier, but the exact time will depend upon factors such as punctuality of start time, conditions on the route and the speed of the group, so cannot be guaranteed. If you have doubts about your fitness or need to leave by a certain time, please check with us before coming on the walk.
Walk leaders
Many thanks to everyone who has agreed to lead walks – particularly our new walk leaders. Although we have a pool of regular leaders, circumstances do change and not every leader is able to run a walk every year. We are always looking out for new leaders in order to continue to offer the current number of walks and to ensure a varied programme. If you would like to lead a walk or co-lead with a more experienced leader, please contact one of the committee to discuss it. You could either suggest a route or we have a number of walking books with good routes.
First Aid kits
Although we recommend our leaders carry a mobile phone for use in emergencies and a small first aid kit, we recommend all walkers bring their own basis first aid requirements (e.g. plasters, pain killers).
Short walks
If you would like to offer to lead further short walks or walks suitable for families for the group, please Email the club secretary
