"Time is..." is a series of 8 silent mini-videos and was presented at Niehler Freiheit in Köln as part of the multimedia performance and concert "secret desires" of Kollektiv3:6Koeln in October 2021.
In this work I tried to display the elasticity of time, our perception of it and the influence of it in the creative process inside a globalized, capitalistic world where everything has to be quick.
The performers are filmed in timelapse (1 picture per second) while working on the preparation and set up of the performance space. This filming technique apparented to stop motion normally allows one to show time consuming actions in accelerated tempo and see the evolution of slow actions happen quicker. If one films a normal situation without changing the rhythm of the elements on the shot, everything will appear accelerated.
As a counterpart to this acceleration, I asked to one or several performers in each shot to move very slowly and accomplish absurd actions with no relation to the main activities in the shot. In the end result we observe a mix of rhythms, the originally unchanged ones appearing hurried, stressed out, and the slowed ones somewhat jerky in spite of their seemingly natural speed.
The combination of these natural and modified rhythms is what tells the story of this work. The clumsy looking slower elements in each shot can be read as an allegory to the existence of creation in a capitalist word - a fragile, flexible and determined act in a turbulent stream.
The 8 following silent miniature videos were made accessible through QR-Codes, which were dispatched over the whole performance space. They were meant to be looked for, discovered, flashed and watched while exploring the space and going from one performance to the next one.
