We've all seen fictionalised screen adaptations of factual books, and thriller movies about high finance. This one will probably feel a bit like Erin Brockovich, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Rainmaker, Wall Street, Rogue Trader, Inside Job, The Big Short, Boiler Room, Money Monster, etc.: an unfamiliar story told in a familiar genre.
The Policy—The Movie will have financial, professional, personal, political, social, cultural and environmental intrigue, suspense, drama, personal tragedy and touches of comedy: high finance; smoke-filled conspiratorial rooms of insurers, reinsurers, politicians, regulators, bankers and their advisers; secret services; high-level government; court rooms; judges; reckless underwriters; dishonest claims managers; complicit incompetent regulators and supervisors; grandiose competent and incompetent lawyers on all sides; charlatan lawyers; ordinary English and American 'unlimited liability' investor victims smooth-talked into joining Lloyd's and staying there; the agents, underwriters and self-regulators at Lloyd's who stiffed them; American corporate victims sold almost worthless Lloyd's blank-cheque insurance; regular-folk American victims of all-too-human uninsured tragedies (asbestos, soil pollution, air pollution, water pollution, carcinogens, other health hazards); charismatic characters, heroes, villains, knife-edge situations, nail-biting suspense… You'll wonder why it took more than twenty years to get made. Screenplay outlines and storyboards now in progress.
(Why was Equitas Re's London address so ironic?)
The raw facts and evidence on film, with the real people who were really there. Compelling and thought-provoking. We'll be going up close and personal with the actual people who lived it and made it all happen. I'll be asking the right questions — blunt, sharp, discomforting! There have been a few documentaries, of very limited scope and now all stale, on parts of the Lloyd's of London crisis. This one will be comprehensive and definitive. A real eye-opener. Planning, storyboarding etc. now in progress
