Sports design is entirely different from the rest of the design world. It comes with specific colors, fonts, styles, and a demographic that won't hold back when they don't like it. Not to mention, you can only use specific colors, fonts, and styles that don't compete with other teams, brands, or entities. So it only makes sense that with the competitive nature of sports comes graphic design that's representative of just that.

Over the past couple of months, several people have pointed me toward the TikTok videos of a designer named Emily Morgan. The videos, some of which Morgan also posts on Twitter and YouTube, are short, clever animations in which she redesigns the logos for various sports teams. Some of the designs work better than others, but the videos have a consistently fun, breezy quality that makes it easy to see how Morgan incorporates various visual inspirations into a logo. The video for her Chicago Cubs redesign is a good example:

I’m not the only one who’s noticed. Several of Morgan’s videos have gone viral, and she’s also gotten shout-outs from several high-profile media outlets, including SportsCenter. Some of the response to the videos has been negative, but it’s still pretty remarkable for a young, unheralded designer to generate so much buzz. It’s also nice to see a woman getting some attention in the usually male-dominated world of sports design.

I was curious to learn more about the person behind the videos, so I recently contacted Morgan and asked to interview her. We spoke by Zoom a few weeks ago. Here’s the transcript, edited for length and clarity:

Emily Morgan: I’m 24. I’m originally from Illinois, which is why I’m a fan of Chicago sports teams, but now I live in Wisconsin, about 15 minutes outside of Milwaukee. I graduated from Marquette in 2021 and worked in marketing for a while, but I quit that a few months ago and now do freelance graphic design full-time.

Sports Events and Tournaments: Event organizers or hosts of sports events and tournaments can benefit from a sports logo to promote their events and create a distinctive brand. The logo can capture the essence of the specific sport, generate excitement, and establish a sense of prestige and competitiveness.

Sports Brands and Apparel Companies: Sports brands and apparel companies specializing in sports equipment, clothing, and merchandise can incorporate a sports logo to differentiate their products and create a strong brand identity. The logo can reflect the values and spirit of the specific sport, appealing to athletes and fans alike.

Sports Facilities and Venues: Sports facilities, stadiums, and arenas can utilize a sports logo to establish their association with a particular sport and create a recognizable brand. The logo can contribute to the overall atmosphere and identity of the venue, attracting both athletes and spectators.

Iconography: Incorporate sports-related symbols, equipment, or imagery that instantly convey the sport. This can include balls, equipment, action poses, or iconic elements associated with the sport. These elements establish an immediate connection to the sport and make the logo easily recognizable.

Dynamic Design: Sports logos often benefit from a sense of movement, action, and energy. Consider incorporating dynamic lines, player poses, or motion blur effects to create a sense of excitement and athleticism within the logo design.

Typography: Choose typography that complements the overall design and captures the spirit of the sport. Experiment with bold, strong, and athletic-inspired fonts to convey power, determination, and competitiveness. The typography should be easily readable and legible at different sizes.

Color Scheme: Select a color scheme that aligns with your team or brand identity while also reflecting the energy and vibrancy of sports. Consider using team colors or colors associated with the specific sport. The chosen colors should enhance the visual impact of the logo and create a strong emotional connection.

Unity and Teamwork: Sports logos can symbolize unity, teamwork, and a sense of community. Consider incorporating elements that represent collaboration, such as multiple players working together or interlocking shapes that symbolize unity and strength.

Versatility: Ensure that your sports logo works well in various applications and sizes. It should be easily adaptable for use on jerseys, merchandise, social media profiles, websites, and other promotional materials. A versatile logo can maintain its impact across different mediums.

By considering these elements, you can create a good sports logo that effectively represents your team, organization, or sports-related venture, capturing the spirit of the sport and resonating with fans, athletes, and supporters.

Some great logo icons that people usually associate with fitness and strength are weights icons, biceps symbols, and dumbbell logos. On the other end of the spectrum, for sports enthusiasts, ferocious animal symbols like bear logos and bulls logos are also popular. 152ee80cbc
