On X Windows I had a cool 'silent-alarm" reminder script that would change my root window (background) color to solid red, just for a few seconds a few moments before changing it back. Is there a way to do this for Windows XP?

I'm thinking some kind of scheduled task that uses cscript to set registry keys (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop) . However my attempts don't seem to have any effect. What do I have to signal to read those registry entries and re-draw the desktop?

This does change the background via command line. Just save this as a bat file. Use bmp or you will have to refresh. Also sets the wallpaper to be stretched. If you take out the wallpaperstyle line it will automatically be centered.

In fact, I just tried this by creating a desktop sized bmp file that was all red. I changed the //HKCU/control panel/desktop/wallpaper key to contain the full pathname to this bitmap. I ran the above command from the command line and the desktop changed to the red bmp that I just created

Here is one option. Create a small Console App with a SharpDevelop. Put this code into Programs.cs. I call the app "CWP"; Change wallpaper. It takes just one parameter on command line: the file name. Tested on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with .bmp -file.

this isn't as cool as actually spending time writing code, but there's a pretty useful system util called bginfo that embeds info into the desktop's background. it's fairly configurable with all sorts of command-line options. no, i didn't write it.

The registry method doesn't work all the time especially if the picture isn't in bmp format so you can try my method. It simply open the picture you want using windows photo viewer and use a keyboard shortcut to set the picture as your desktop wallpaper.

Current process via intune only works if you upload an online link which I don't have access to setup.

I've worked out how to push out files via intune so every machine could have this file ready to go locally.

I'd also quite easily be able to upload a file to intune but it doesn't give me this option.

@Danny Borland , Long time not heard from your. I am writing to see if we have the opportunity to try the suggested steps to configure the local image? Did it work? if there's any update, feel free to let us know. Thanks !

@Danny Borland , For the Locked screen picture URL and wallpaper background picture URL, in the CSP description, it can also be a file Url to a local image. We can see more details in the following link:

Hi @Dave Patrick , thank you for the replying to my inquiry. I followed the instruction from the link you shared but I just having problem with pushing a specific desktop wallpaper to a domain user's folder location using GPO.

If you are asked to deploy to a specific wallpaper in your organization, then group policy will be one of your choice. Note that there are many other ways to deploy wallpaper. In this post we will see the easiest way to configure desktop wallpaper using group policy.

To brief you about group policy, Group Policy is an infrastructure that allows you to specify managed configurations for users and computers through Group Policy settings and Group Policy Preferences. To configure Group Policy settings that affect only a local computer or user, you can use the Local Group Policy Editor.

You can manage Group Policy settings and Group Policy Preferences in an Active Directory Domain Services environment through the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC). However note that Group Policy management tools also are included in the Remote Server Administration Tools pack to provide a way for you to administer Group Policy settings from your desktop.

Open the Group Policy Management Console. In the Group Policy Management Console, right click on the domain and click Create a GPO in this domain and link it here. You can also create a group policy object and later use the option Link an existing GPO.

To link an existing GPO, right-click the domain or OU within the domain, and then click Link an Existing GPO. Provide a name to the GPO, once the GPO is created, right click on the GPO and click Edit. This will open the Group Policy Management Editor.

To enable this setting click Enabled. The wallpaper name should be set to either local path of the image or it can be UNC path. Set the wallpaper style as Fill. This will work best with most screen resolutions. Click Apply and OK.

You need to apply this group policy to the user group. Note that this policy is applicable only to domain users. If you are looking to apply the same policy to computers then you should make use of Loopback processing of Group Policy

On the client machine wait for the policy to get updated. The users may have to log off and login once to see the changed desktop wallpaper. In the below screenshot we see that desktop wallpaper policy settings have been successfully applied.

My wallpaper policy is working fine in domain network but goes black when gets disconnected from the domain network and my customer wants common wallpaper should be working in cache even they connect from different network

can we set .mp4 wallpaper from regedit or local group policy editor i mean to say without install any third party software by just edting or removing windows defult .jpg file format wallpaper into .mp4 file format wallpaper is their any process of its ???

I have different situation, we set wallpaper through GPO using registry hive. It applied and working fine and allow user to change his desktop background. user able to change background but it policy reapplied when reboot machine.

What I did in this scenario is, I created a seperate GPO to copy the desktop background to a public folder on the local machine and updated the desktop background GPO to that path, instead of directing them to a network folder that they may or may not have access to at certain times. This way every time they log in, the background file is always available to the users.

Hello sir, I have applied the wallpaper group policy in windows server 2016 some of the client machines showing only a black screen. I have run gpupdate/force command on those client machines but still showing a black screen only. kindly give your advice to resolve this issue.

Hi This information is good i have already applied GPO for wallpaer but issue i am facing that wallpaper applying for only domain users. i have loopback also enabled still same issue. if i need same wallpaper for all users inluding Local users is there any addidional settings, tied all possible ways from my side and then tried to search solution if avialble

Hi PrajwalDesai,

I have DC1 and Dc2 I have created the policy on DC1 and it synced sucessfully with DC2. and client machine running with Win10. Policy is not applied for the client machines.

I have applied this policy on the Default domain policy.

I have successfully deployed on windows 7 computers. But with windows 10 computers there are some computers that are not working, even though the image file was copied successfully on that machine.

Please help me fix this, thank you very much.

Different types of videos are suitable for different purposes. For example, if you just want to enjoy your favorite movie while you work or browse the web, simply choose a video of a suitable length.

If, however, you really want an eye-catching desktop background, then selecting a shorter clip would be more appropriate, especially if it's something that will be striking when looped. Video clips and GIFs can both be used.

Begin by heading to the site and downloading PUSH Video Wallpaper. Run the EXE file to install, and then launch the app. Instantaneously, your desktop background will be transformed as the app runs, displaying a demo video clip on a loop.

Other controls include a shuffle button, the option to change video intervals, and a volume/mute button. This could prove useful for controlling audio levels when you might prefer to be working. Playlists of videos for a video wallpaper can also be created.

The result is a smooth, full-screen desktop video wallpaper background, with app windows and icons sitting in the foreground. PUSH Video Wallpaper is a great option to set a video as your Windows desktop background.

A fourth option is for Windows 10 which uses a tool available from the Windows Store. Desktop Live Wallpaper+ puts you in full control of the images, GIFs, and videos that play on your desktop background.

Our last method on this list for running a video wallpaper on Windows is DeskScape from StarDock, a premium desktop customization app that lets you change your wallpapers and screensavers for a more fulfilling user experience. While this app is not available for free, it does come with a free 30-day trial.

As you can see, you can choose to pick up your wallpapers either from your PC locally or straight from the internet. To set up a video wallpaper, switch to the Online tab, select any video wallpaper of your liking and click on Download this background. After the download is complete, switch to the Local tab and select the Downloaded folder from the Animated section of your app.

Another way to create a desktop background video is through the most versatile of desktop media players, the VLC media player. Available from VideoLAN.org, the VLC media player is available for all operating systems. 152ee80cbc
