NEH recognizes the important role of two-year institutions and community colleges in serving the needs of a diverse student population, expanding access to education, and connecting communities with humanities research and ideas. NEH encourages two-year institutions and community colleges and their faculty members to take advantage of all NEH grant programs and resources, including those that are community college-specific.  

Chronicling America is an open access database of historic American newspapers created by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress.  Chronicling America currently has over 13 million pages of historic newspapers, with more being added all the time.  State partners also contribute essays about each newspaper title’s history. 

On July 4, 2026, America will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the nation’s principles of equality, liberty, and government by consent of the governed. This historic milestone is an opportunity for Americans to reflect on the nation’s past, honor the contributions of all Americans, celebrate the nation’s rich cultural heritage, and look toward its next 250 years – it is an opportunity that calls for the humanities.
