Community Support Agriculture (CSA)

Whatley in the 1960s and 70s, and in European cooperative farm economics, explored by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s and capitalized upon by farmers in post-WWII Germany and Switzerland."
Farm-to-Table
Farm-to-table is a phrase that can mean different things to different people. At its heart, farm-to-table means that the food on the table came directly from a specific farm, without going through a store, market, or distributor along the way. It is not a regulated phrase, so it can be employed by anyone who considers their offerings to fit the definition. Similar phrases include locally-sourced, farm fresh, and farm-to-fork.
Food Cooperatives (Food Co-ops)
Member-owned grocery stores or food distribution networks that operate democratically and prioritize local, ethical, or sustainable food sources.
Food Sovereignty
The right of people to define their own food systems — including access to healthy, culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound methods — and their right to control food production and distribution.
Permaculture
A system of designing land and settlements to mimic natural ecosystems, guided by the ethics of Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share, to create sustainable and self-sufficient ways of living.
Backyard Abundance (EarthMind Practice)
Founded in 2006, Backyard Abundance is a leading educational 501(c)(3) nonprofit residing in Johnson County, Iowa. They have a variety of classes, presentations, tours, and consultations.
There is also a University of Iowa group for students called Earthmind - a four-week course

Historic Poor Farm
In 2017, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors adopted a 10-year master plan to guide the development of the Historic Poor Farm property. Onsite Partners include: Johnson County Local Food and Farm Team, Iowa Valley Resource Conservation & Development, Johnson County Historical Society, Global Food Project, Eocene Environmental Group, and IIHR - Hydroscience & Engineering.

Iowa City Farmer's Market
The Iowa City Farmers Market is managed by the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department. It is an open-air market held in the Chauncey Swan parking ramp, Chauncey Swan Park, and on E. Washington St. in downtown Iowa City. The market runs from May through October.

There are a variety of services available including Weekly Food Assistance, Summer Lunch & School Break Nutrition, Free Community Meal, Veggie Connect, and a Seed Library.

Field to Family
Field to Family is a nonprofit organization that increases access to and education about healthy local food. They are a comprehensive regional food hub and online market - every week their registered customers receive weekly email reminders ahead of each opportunity to choose local.

Global Food Project
Global Food Project was founded in 2016 - the program was established at the Johnson County Historic Poor Farm. In 202, the program came under the wing of IC Compassions and in January 2021 a Program Manager was hired. They offer both smaller plots for families to grow for themselves (Family Plots) and larger plots for those who are looking to grow for sale (Market Plots).
