Every Friday night in the rounded outdoor amphitheater of downtown's Pritchard Park people join together to play thundering sounds on the drums, dance to the powerful rhythms, or just sit back and enjoy the show of individuality and diverse community.

There is no one leader but rather the rhythm comes together as the group feels the momentum of the beat. In the courtyard, belly dancers, hula-hoopers and other dancers with cowbells and triangles add to the symphony of sounds and variety of visuals. Everyone from toddlers to the more seasoned share their moves with the crowd. The popularity of the Pritchard Park drum circle has led to another drum circle at Lake Julian, which occurs on the last Thursday of every month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The concert lasted almost an hour and concluded with a number that could put the grand finale of any July 4 fireworks show to shame. Nearly 30 children ran to the foot of the stage to jump up and down, dance and twirl to the beat of music that dates back to almost the 12th century.

At the end of the concert the younger audience members jumped up on stage to pound the skins of the drums and learn about the history of West African drumming in the process. The Kids Music Club, which was started in 2004, is inspiring a whole new crop of future African Drum Ensemble hopefuls.

That's why he believes it's important to have a positive influence on them at a young age. "Instead of doing all this boring police stuff, he gets to be with us doing fun stuff like the drums," said student Luke.

Neil: Hello, Li. Are you ready?

Li: Yes, Neil! We're going to that event for the protection of turtles, aren't we Neil? Where is it happening again?

Neil: By the beach. They're going to make speeches and then release some small turtles into the sea.

Li: How sweet! I love baby turtles!

Neil: Yes, they're lovely, aren't they? Let's go and join all the scientists, animal lovers and campaigners and beat the drum for the cause!

Li: Beat the drum? Will there be drums there?

Neil: No. I don't think so...

Li: But if you think we need to drum, I have one here. We can beat the drum, like this...

Neil: You're a great drummer Li, but sadly no need for drums. It might scare the baby turtles.

Li: But why are you talking about drums then?!

Neil: I'll tell you. In English, when we say 'to beat the drum' or 'to bang the drum' we mean to speak with enthusiasm about an idea in order to persuade or convince other people to support it.

Li: Ah! I see. No real drums, then...

Neil: No. 'Beat the drum' is our expression in this edition of The English We Speak. Now let's hear some examples of how it's used.

Students are encouraged to purchase their own drums, especially as they reach higher skill levels. School of Rock does let kids borrow drums for rehearsal, but for best results our drum teachers recommend students to have a drum set at home for daily practice, and a practice kit is a good, quiet option.

At School of Rock, we teach private drums lessons in-person or online in conjunction with weekly band rehearsals meant to build confidence and teamwork. While we do offer private drum instruction, we strongly encourage students to play in band rehearsals as a way of exploring group dynamics as they become more proficient on the drums.

All students are different, and some are ready to play before others. As a parent, you can look for signs that your child is ready for drum lessons. Check out our resource on the best age to learn to play drums for more information.

The 21 Savage Drum Kit is perfect for any producer looking to emulate the sound of artists such as 21 Savage, Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz, Young Thugz and many more. Featuring original drum sounds to kickstart your production. No more beat block!

And then came the idea that started the whole program. She came across a group of kids playing drums next to their school. At the same time, Starks said, she noticed police on the same block, searching for suspects in a recent shooting.

U.S. Air Force and Vietnam War Veteran Jerry Tuckwin, who continues to be an active figure in the operations of the Prairie Band Potawatomi, served as the Lamar Hunt Legacy Seat honoree on Sunday while Special Olympian Bradley Tanner, a native of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, beat the drum as the Tony DiPardo Spirit Leader at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Although it's a cool feature it just doesn't feel like it's me doing it and I'm not sure I'd be able to get one of the "drummers" to play exactly the beat I want, so I'd rather make my own beat from scratch.

I once took an ableton course where one of the things we learned was making your very own drum beat using the drum samples included by placing them all onto a beat grid/piano roll. It was so much more rewarding and fun!

I am sure by now you figured out what you needed to..but I had this same issue the past hour or two, and I found the answer. This is for anyone in the future who, like myself, find themselves needing to make their own beat. If you right click on the drum track once the drummer is set up, and go to convert-> convert to MIDI region. This will do it. It makes it go into the 'piano roll' mode same as is used for any of the instruments. Hope this helps!

Doudou N'Diaye Rose was a brilliant musician and a brilliant dresser as well, with a custom-made wardrobe of vivid, billowing outfits. Above, wearing Senegal's national colors, he sets the beat at a concert in Dakar on Dec. 10, 2010. Seyllou Diallo/AFP/Getty Images  hide caption

He had extraordinary energy and vigor well into his 80s, darting from one end of the stage to the other, leaping in the air, dancing, waving his hands, conducting and pointing his drumstick, before pouncing on his sabar and beating it to perfection. He was also quick to smile and to help others.

He traveled all over Senegal to learn the lyrical language of the drum and, as he put it, "more than a hundred different rhythms." It was only then, he said, that the elders appointed him the new chief drum-major. During his lifetime, he added significantly to the vibrant vocabulary and rhythms of the sabar and the many other traditional drums he played.

N'Diaye Rose often recalled this early period of his life, when he learned that the tapping of the drums was a surefire method of communication between villages. Drums were played at marriages, baptisms, naming and circumcision ceremonies and other social gatherings.

This spirited and moving program of world music, folklore and dance will inspire you and get you moving to the beat of the drums. The Talking Drums interpret the tones and rhythms of African languages. Through the Talking Drums and storytelling, the program will explore the cultural and historical traditions of Jonkonnu. The program is participatory and uses art, often music, to transcend culture, class, and disabilities in order to bring together a stronger sense of community.

The implementation of this design is just as important as the design itself. The craftsmanship throughout these congas is superb. From our perfectly shaped and smoothed joints to the four part finishing process, these conga drums look as beautiful as they sound!

The stainless steel we use is laser cut (outsourced to a local fabrication shop), hand formed, and TIG welded with precision right here in our shop. The final hardware is polished and bead-blasted for a beautiful matte finish. Under our hardware you will find thin rubber gaskets that protect the shell and minimize transferring shell vibration back through the conga hardware to the skin which can cause odd overtones.
