McAuley Village is a welcoming community for women and children with transformational programs and services that help families recover from the trauma of homelessness and victimization. In partnership with Sojourner House the families benefit from housing stabilization services, expert case management and counseling, training, advocacy, and immigration services. The children of McAuley Village have access to quality daycare on-site, and participate is a wealth of services and activities focused on healthy habits, educational support, enrichment activities, and just plain FUN!
Over the past three decades, with our support our Village graduates have secured positions in the medical, dental, childcare and transportation fields. Many have graduated from local colleges and universities including CCRI, RIC, Roger Williams, and Brown University.
Families live in a secured building featuring 23 apartments including 2- and 3-bedroom units and have access to an on-site, childcare center, laundromat, and on-site parking. The Village is steps away from a well-maintained park with playgrounds and fields.
The Village program recognizes the unique background and needs of our families. Supportive services are tailored to meet individual needs of each family and may include specialized tutoring in English, help navigating DHS and the public school system, and partnering with DCYF. On-site caseworkers and counselors from our partner, Sojourner House, are regularly present at The Village to assist families. The McAuley Village Program offers a variety of programs specific to children such as on-site childcare, tutoring, reading groups, frequent any day and school vacation fun days, art activities, festive holiday parties, and celebrations. Residents of all ages receive the support they need to thrive and to achieve their very best.
We are proud to say that 90 percent of former residents have not re-entered the homeless system, and have instead moved into stable, sustainable lifestyles. Over the past three decades our Village graduates have become medical assistants, medical technicians, CNAs, nurses, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and school bus drivers. Others have been trained in early childhood education and secured full time employment in childcare centers. Many have graduated from local colleges and universities including CCRI, RIC, Roger Williams, and Brown University.
This has a particularly heavy impact on refugee and immigrant communities. Many child care facilities lack the appropriate cultural or linguistic training to provide comfort and understanding to parents of different backgrounds. making child care options for these families even fewer. CMC remains committed to ensuring we create an inclusive community where everyone has an equal opportunity to become independent and self-sufficient and is proud to be launching a new initiative to address the lack of child care and provide career opportunities for refugees, in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.
Hannah Miles, Refugee Child Care Program Coordinator, was hired to direct the program thanks to a federal grant from the Office of Refugee Resettlement. CMC is one of eight organizations in the nation that was selected for this funding. As the coordinating agency, CMC strives to not only increase the amount of culturally and linguistically appropriate child care, but also to help participants become more financially stable and self-sufficient by providing potential career opportunities and more accessible child care.
In 2018, the World Forgotten Children Foundation (WFCF) funded US$ 5,731 to the The Imani Project in Kenya. The funds went toward the purchase of custom wheelchairs and other apparatus for children with severe cognitive and physical disabilities living in the remote coastal villages of Kenya.
As an organization we are working on creating a national assistive technology program (which primarily focuses on wheelchair provision at this time) to meet the extensive need within the country of Kenya. As a result, folks from the Imani project saw that we were providing wheelchairs and contacted us to help them provide wheelchairs to families with children in particular need.
My role with the Imani project was to assess the children, provide appropriate seating and fittings for the children, train the families on use of the wheelchairs and provide a basic rehabilitation assessment and advise/home exercise program. We, BethanyKids, will also do follow ups and make sure that the wheelchairs are functioning appropriately.
It is a great feeling for me to be able to provide someone with an appropriately fitting mobility devise as it not only provides them with the potential to explore their environment more, prevent injury and treat deformities, but it also allows me to have an impact in providing dignity to whom they are as individuals. It also brings light to the needs and blessing that children with special needs can be to the community. It is especially special when a child who has been confined to the floor on the inside of a hut all of a sudden has this great huge smile because he or she is now on the same level and same orientation as all of their peers (it opens up a whole new world)!
We work with several different organizations to obtain different types of wheelchairs for different needs (we use WHO standards in our process for deciding what a child needs, assessing, fitting, and follow up). We then utilize parts from other wheelchairs, local resources like wood, foam and cloth materials to create custom sizing and supports as needed.
The CAMCAC offers a safe, child-friendly environment, where a comprehensive and coordinated approach is taken in response to allegations of child abuse. The CAMCAC is one of 17 advocacy centers in the state of Arkansas and has the unique distinction of being the only hospital-based child advocacy center in the state.
