The Year is 1979, and the whole world is engaged in the throes of the Cold War. After the terror and tragedy of World War II and with the knowledge that nuclear weapons exist, the world has been divided in two- the Western Bloc headed by the United States and the Eastern Bloc led by the Soviet Union. These two conglomerates vie for social, economic, and political power. Tensions are high as the stakes rise domestically, internationally, and even on the moon. These two groups will need to balance winning the Cold War with the meeting needs of their internal countries.
The two groups will receive crises both internally that threaten to destabilize the Bloc's integrity while simultaneously dealing with crises caused by the opposing bloc. The two sides of the crisis will act simultaneously, and one’s actions may affect the fate of the other side. Similar to the actual Cold War, the groups will not be actively fighting, but their proxy actions worldwide will affect the geopolitics of the whole world.
The DEFCON 5 committee will be run as a crisis simulation. While the traditional General Assembly and specialized committees in Model UN operate on a set topic basis, the crisis does not. Instead, the actions the delegates take directly affect each update and influence the chronology of the committee. As the committee progresses, our crisis staff will provide updates. Normally crisis updates will come in the form of news updates, and will reflect the actions that the committee takes.
DEFCON 5 will not require the submission of a position paper or any documents prior to committee. Spend your time researching your crisis and your character.
Below, you will find the background guide for this committee. To use the hyperlinks and the the table of contents, you may open the guide in a new window and download it.
