Welcome to Vaduz, Liechtenstein! The European powers have been brought together to the Congress of Vaduz to tackle some of Europe’s most pressing issues. The year is 1913 but wounds of the Napoleonic Wars are fresh in the minds of all. The Napoleonic Era was a particularly brutal one that brought about massive loss of life and substantial decrease in economic productivity. Therefore, the empires and kingdoms of Europe were intent on building a system by which conflict would be avoided by the implementation of a framework wherein large-scale wars would become antiquated and peaceful coexistence would be the norm. They created the Congress system and proffered the concept of an approach that embraced a balance of power. Thanks to this, the Concert of Europe was born.
The Concert of Europe was a construct that brought lasting peace by using a concept of balance of powerand by protecting the interests among nations in Europe during the 19th Century. It is called a “concert” because European nations “played” in sync with each other to present a concert of overall relative peace and stability in Europe. The Concert was dominated by the five Great Powers of Europe consisting of Austria, France, Prussia (later Germany), Russia, and the United Kingdom. They met periodically at congresses to decide the future of their continent by sorting out Europe’s major conflicts, redrawing and dividing borders, and helping rebuild international order.
The Concert of Europe will require a position paper. Please see the resources tab for information on position paper requirements and submit your position paper by the deadline which you can find in the schedule.
