The EEAS (European External Action Service) is the European Union's diplomatic service. It helps the EU's foreign affairs chief – the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy – carry out the Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy. EEAS is a new organization that is a combined European Union foreign policy delegation focusing on “Guided by the Global Strategy, however, the EU acted to steadfastly champion multilateralism and the rules-based global order, cooperative approaches and working in partnership, an integrated approach to crises, as well as the primacy of human rights and sustainability. We also made significant progress in enhancing the EU's resilience and strategic autonomy” (EU, 2019).
A key aspect of the work of the EEAS is its ability to work closely with the foreign and defense ministries of the member states of the EU and the other EU institutions such as the European Commission, Council, and Parliament and it also has a strong working relationship with the United Nations and other International Organisations (EEAS). Based in Brussels, but relying on an extensive network of EU diplomatic presence worldwide, the EEAS brings together European civil servants, diplomats from the foreign services of the EU member states and local staff in countries around the world (EEAS).
EEAS follows the Treaty of Lisbon which was established by the European Union, a link below will give further detail about the treaty itself. EEAS formally launched on January 1st of 2011 and was created by the Lisbon Treaty which was signed in 2007 and entered into force towards the end of 2009 establishing the European External Action Service. This group works closely with existing EU institutions and bodies who play big roles in developing EU foreign policy, therefore this body is limited to creations of bodies, as well as reporting to the EU.
