June is Pride Month. As with other months that highlight historically marginalized aspects of our community members’ identities, we want to provide some resources that may be helpful to you in determining how best to incorporate the spirit of the month into your classrooms. The resources below offer several best practices, resources, and lesson ideas to ensure your classroom is a safe space for our students who identify as LGBTQ. These can serve as resources if you are unaware of the history behind pride month or help you to ensure your classrooms are an inclusive place for all students.
Pride Month Resources for Educators
Anti-Defamation League LGBTQ Pride Month and Education Resources -These lesson plans focus on LGBTQ issues and history. Included are lesson plans on Marriage Equality, the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, the Stonewall Uprising, and helping students understand about proper usage of preferred pronouns and names.
LGTBQ Best Practices Guide -From Learning for Justice (formerly Teaching Tolerance), this article aimed at teachers discusses the rights of LGBTQ students in schools and provides a brief overview of common issues these students face in education.
Lesson plans for creating a safe environment for LGBTQ students -The Gay Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) provides a comprehensive document that assists teachers with becoming educated on LGBTQ issues and provides pointers on creating an inclusive, safe environment for LGBTQ students.
