Croquet: six hoops, four balls, two mallets and a patch of grass

A Sport for everyone, friendships, fun, competition and a whole lot more!!

Croquet is a game of skill and strategy, angles, tactics, guile. A bit like snooker on grass. Will your balls get through the hoops and peg out before your opponent's?

Here are a couple of messages from our Chair and some great photos:

WELSH CROQUET ASSOCIATION CLIB COMPETITION - GOLF CROQUET LEVEL PLAY

I’d like to thank each and every Llanidloes player for their commitment and part in the above competition held on Saturday 31st. July at Llanfairfechan.

Many would perhaps say it was both a bold and brave step to “throw our hat into the ring”, given our inexperience in any form of competition. Remember we as a club formed just three years ago!

But you have to start sometime and somewhere. So what better than a two hour trip to the North Wales coast to get started!

As a group we haven’t had a chance as yet to “debrief” and each member of the two teams will have their own personal view and general overview of the day.

I would like the chance to meet with them and gain their impressions before perhaps giving a more detailed account of our day.

Once again on behalf of Llanidloes Croquet Club my thanks and appreciation to all team members.

David.

WELSH CROQUET ASSOCIATION CLIB COMPETITION - GOLF CROQUET LEVEL PLAY - Part 2

An early start and two hour journey for some, a shorter trip after an overnight stay in Llandudno for others with a meet-up in sea drizzle at the venue just after 9. 30am. The first two games were just getting underway. A chance to view the opposition!

Our  two teams acquitted themselves well in all matches but Llanfairfechan Seagulls proved to be unbeatable and were declared the overall winners. They will play the winner of a parallel competition held in Merthyr Mawr at the same time. The winners here were Glamorgan Red Team.

This, “The Welsh Final”  is to be hosted by our club on September 11th.

Make a note of the date in your diary; come and be a spectator to get a wider perspective of skills and tactics at the next level of play.

Overall our day was somewhat like “the curate’s egg” - good in parts. Having spoken to almost all team members the general impression was that they enjoyed the experience and that overall it was a positive one.

The famous Welsh drizzle stopped soon after our arrival and the rest of the day stayed dry if somewhat cool. The host club, Llanfairfechan, looked after all participants well and he competition was well organised and ran to time.

We made positive links with the other clubs and their members that could lead to further inter club meetings. Craig y don are keen to form links and they were formed about 8 yrs ago, so as a relatively new club, have similar standards, member profile and skills to ourselves. (Janet has forwarded an email from their secretary to all our members highlighting how keen they are).

The day provided opportunities to measure our skill levels against other team members and although in my opinion there was one team, the eventual winners, who were stronger than all the others we can easily consider our selves equal to the these.

And now the disclaimer!  As already mentioned this is my overall impression of the day and the views expressed are entirely my own.

Best wishes to you all, DAVID
