šļø 8 June 2024 | š Institute of Science and Management (ISM), Tawau, Sabah
Koperasi Landskap Kelapa Sawit Sabah Berhad (LKSS) convened its 4th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Institute of Science and Management (ISM), Tawau. The meeting brought together 137 members, with 76 members attending physically and 61 members participating via Zoom.
In his opening address, LKSS Chairman, Mr. Shim Nyuk Min, expressed his appreciation to members for their continued support and cooperation throughout the MSPO and RSPO certification processes.
He highlighted the importance of ongoing assessments and responsible plantation management, including Chemical Health Risk Assessments (CHRA), Social Impact Assessments (SIA), and High Conservation Value (HCV) and High Biodiversity Value (HBV) assessments. These efforts support environmental protection, responsible labour practices, and the continued improvement of sustainable palm oil production.
The Chairman also shared updates on RSPO certification progress. In 2024, 51 new Independent Smallholder (ISH) members expressed interest in joining the RSPO certification programme, building on the progress achieved by members who had successfully participated in the RSPO Credits system.
The LKSS Staff, Mr. Razzeman Siswanto, Ms. Qairunisha, and Ms. Azlinah presented updates on the cooperativeās MSPO certification activities for both the Medium-Sized Growers (MSG), Ā Independent Smallholders (ISH) group and RSPO Independent Smallholders (ISH) Group.
For the MSG group, internal audit findings and areas for improvement were shared, including worker payment practices, environmental documentation, scheduled waste management, workersā housing, and compliance with occupational safety requirements. The upcoming internal audit plans were also presented to support continuous improvement and audit readinessonĀ
For the ISH group, updates were provided on the results of the previous audit, upcoming training programmes, and recertification activities. The cooperative also outlined its internal audit plans to ensure members continued to meet the requirements of the MSPO Standards.RSPO, 75 ISH members remain certified. Group 1 members were congratulated for passing the Milestone A audit, while Group 2 is scheduled for the Eligibility Stage audit on 29 July 2025.

Members were also updated on the cooperativeās financial performance, including its income, expenditure, and financial planning. Discussions were held on the allocation of surplus funds, investment opportunities, and the maximum limit of indebtedness to support the cooperativeās long-term financial stability and growth.
At the end of the AGM, Mr. Shim Nyuk Min addressed a crucial point concerning the collaboration with WWF Malaysia. Following a recent meeting with WWF Malaysia's leadership team, Mr. Shim shared the discussions about potential collaborations.Ā
Mr. Shim emphasized that WWF Malaysia is fervently committed to showcasing success stories from Koperasi LKSSās certified Independent Smallholders (ISH) and Medium Size Growers (MSG). The Sabah WWF team has been tasked with expediting the identification of potential buyers for LKSSās MSG RSPO credits. These stories could significantly contribute to the success of the Jurisdictional Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (JCSPO) initiative in Sabah.Ā
Mr. Shim proposed that the Koperasi LKSSās board of directors consider the WWF sub-grant, which would enable WWF to engage potential RSPO credit buyers confidently. However, he stipulated that he would only agree to this sub-grant if WWF could find a buyer for the credits. Currently, he has put a hold on agreeing to the sub-grant, reflecting his cautious approach to ensuring tangible benefits for LKSS. He assured the committee of the teamās full support for MSG members willing to undergo RSPO certification, utilizing available resources and assistance to ensure compliance with standards.
The AGM concluded with a call for member suggestions and resolutions, fostering an inclusive approach to cooperative governance. Members were encouraged to voice their concerns and provide feedback on various aspects of the cooperative's operations. Key suggestions included the need for better communication channels between the board and members, more frequent updates on audit findings, and greater transparency in decision-making processes.Ā
In response, the board committed to implementing these suggestions and outlined plans to enhance member engagement through digital platforms and regular newsletters. This proactive approach aims to build trust and ensure that members are well-informed and actively involved in the cooperative's growth and development.Ā
As Koperasi LKSS embarks on another year of operations, it remains steadfast in its mission to promote sustainable palm oil production and improve the socio-economic well-being of its members. The cooperative's ongoing efforts in certification, financial management, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship highlight its commitment to a sustainable and prosperous future.
