Gender inequality Script
Intro:
Hello everyone my name is Liza zeh, and I am a dual enrollment student at the College of Coastal Georgia. Today I will be talking about gender inequality in the United States, and how it affects women. Gender inequality is not something new, it has been around for decades, but now people are speaking up. Gender inequality can happen in many different places like: the work place, school, sports, and education. When it comes to women in the workplace men are treated better, and most women think they are inferior to them. This is not a light topic, but it is something people need to start to talk more about.
Body:
As women live through life they are often reminded every day that men think they are superior to them. Gender inequality has been around for many decades and doesn't seem to be going away any time soon. Even though there have been many people coming forward about gender inequality, there haven't been permanent changes. In Cecilia Ridgeway's book, “Framed by Gender:How Gender Inequality Persists in the Modern World'', she talks about gender inequality in the United States. The way she describes gender inequality is put in a way most authors wouldn’t dare to say. Ridgeway states, “A system of gender inequality like this has persisted in the United States despite major transformation in the way that gender, at any given time, has been entwined with the economic and social organization of American Society”(1). She does a great job explaining that it affects women in many different environments. Throughout the chapter she explains that the way that the United States was built had led for men to get many more advancement than women
Another article I read was, “State liberalism, female supervisors, and the gender wage gap”, by David Maume and Leah Ruppanner. In this article they dig into the topic of gender wage gap and female supervisors. They discover that the pay gap between men and women generally rises with the state liberalism on one hand, and on the other hand if you're working for a female boss it significantly reduces wages (vol. 50). Both of these points that the authors highlighted were found out by pooling the 1997 and 2002 “National Study of the Changing Workforce surveys”.
The last article I read on gender inequality highlighted gender inequality in sports. Many different people in sports have used their platform recently to talk about the gender inequality in their particular sport. The article, “Gender Inequality in sports”, by Jad Moawad, does a great job talking about the difference between men and women, and how women are discriminated against, undervalued and underpaid in many areas of sports. In the article he said something that would strike the readers, “Some female basketball and soccer players risk termination of contract without compensation when pregnant. Many players accept and sign such contracts without reporting this oppressive clause or complaining because they fear to lose their careers” (29). When I read this it took me a while to fully digest it, because of the weight it carries. I would have never thought that this is a reality some women in professional sports would have to go through. As women know and some can attest to, gender inequality is one thing that has been persistent in the United States, and will continue to which is a sad reality
