The fellowship

Learning Objectives ­­­­­­­­­­

1. To gain training in all aspects of medical and surgical rhinology. Develop the knowledge and experience of managing patients from diagnosis to post-operative care in those with rhinological conditions.
2. Understand the preoperative work-up and processes including quality of life aspects in treatment management of rhinological conditions.
3. To develop skills in advanced endoscopic sinus surgery techniques for nasal airway obstruction, infection and neoplasm.
4. To develop surgical skills in open and closed septorhinoplasty techniques in order to address both cosmetic and functional nasal deformities.
5. To provide increased exposure to a variety of anterior skull base pathologies, multi-disciplinary approach to the management of these conditions and exposure to different the different surgical (open and endoscopic) techniques.

Learning Outcomes

1. To competently manage patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and other sinonasal conditions. It is expected that by the end of the fellowship period they will be capable of independent Consultant practice in this subspecialty.
2. To be able to independently undertake a variety of surgical procedures specific to rhinology including endoscopic sinus surgery, septoplasty and management of the hypertropic inferior turbinate.
3. To be competent at the use of image guidance system and understand the role of this technology in surgical rhinology.
4. Competently assess a patient for cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty, be involved in the consent process and have significant surgical exposure to septorhinoplasty (open and closed techniques).
5. To assist in training of junior colleagues in all aspects of ENT with specific emphasis on rhinology.
6. Be involved and contribute to the running of a fully functional skull base MDT.
7. To conduct audit and research on rhinology surgery within the unit in the subspeciality of rhinology.
8. To present research results in scientific conferences and publish in peer reviewed journals.
9. Participate in on call rota in busy regional head and neck and regional major trauma centre.

Weekly schedule

On average, there are 3.0 days of operating theatre and up to 1.5 days of out-patient clinic with the remainder devoted to administration, audit and research.

On call arrangements

Emergency daytime cover will be provided between 8am to 5pm, one week in nine during which normal daytime commitments are cancelled. Out-of-hours cover will be on a one-in-nine prospective cover. Although the unit accepts referrals from neighbouring hospitals, there is no cross site cover with all admissions being admitted centrally to Aintree University Hospital.
