The unit welcomes experienced ENT surgeons who have an interest in rhinology and anterior skull base surgery. This observational mini fellowship offers the candidate an opportunity to interact with faulty, observe surgery, attend courses and be immersed in the multi-professional interactions of the skull base team.
The fellow will observe primary and revision endoscopic sinus surgery in a busy tertiary referral unit. Common pathologies include chronic rhinosinusitis with and without nasal polyposis, allergic fungal rhinosinusitis, paranasal sinus mucoceles, aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease, and benign and malignant paranasal sinus tumours. Endoscopic septoplasty and turbinate surgery for nasal obstruction are often performed, as are septorhinoplasty. The faculty has a busy rhinology service and regularly works with both maxillo-facial and neurosurgeons. Procedures include cerebrospinal fluid leak repair, resection of sinonasal tumours and endoscopic pituitary surgery.
Observation of surgical procedures can be variable and is dependent on the case mix at the time of the mini fellowship. Although this is an observer role only, there may be an opportunity to undertake a project (clinical audit or research) with the aim of having the fellow achieve first authorship of the study they are in charge of.
• To become familiar with the evaluation and treatment of inflammatory rhinologic disorders, sinonasal malignancies and nasal deformities.
• To become familiar with septorhinoplasty, endoscopic sinus surgery and extended skull base procedures.
Accommodation on the hospital campus can be arranged but the fellow is expected to be self-funded.
