This year, Amsterdam is celebrating its 750th birthday. But many aspects of the city, such as the materials it is made of, the species it shelters, and the cultural traditions it is rooted in, are much older than these 750 years. While the city was built on such older fundaments, it also affected them during its 750 year history.
The little big histories, or long-term histories about small aspects of the world around us, on the map below provide a glimpse of that. For more on these little big histories, which have been created by first year Global Arts, Culture and Politics students of the University of Amsterdam, visit the About section. Or, simply start exploring little big histories of Amsterdam, and particularly our favourite ones, marked in red, right away.
While doing so, keep in mind that it is easiest to use the map in a browser. Particularly when using it in the Google Map app on an iPhone, the links to the projects have to be copied and pasted into a browser, which can be a bit cumbersome.
