Little big histories are long term, or big, histories of small aspects of the world around us.
They are structured around the idea that almost all aspects of the world around us have a material, biological and cultural dimension. All of these dimensions have their own histories, some of which date back billions of years. Jointly, these histories made all aspects of our current world into what they are today.
Little big histories exist in many forms: They can be the result of larger research projects or of smaller student assignments. The little big histories that can be found here are the result of an assignment that students from the bachelor Global Arts, Cultural and Politics from the University of Amsterdam worked on during their first semester in Amsterdam. The goal of the assignment was to encourage them to explore how cultural, biological and geological processes have affected each other in the past, in order the gain a better understanding of current and future interactions between these processes.
The results of these explorations have been published on the map in an unedited form: they do not necessarily represent the ideas of the students' lecturers, but reflect students' own thoughts on the city, which many of them just moved to.
