Vocabulary is the understanding of what a word means and being able to properly use words while speaking, listening, writing and reading (Reading Rockets, n.d.-a). Beyond that, having a solid understanding of vocabulary means knowing how that "word fits into the world" (Read Naturally, n.d.). Young children begin to acquire vocabulary through incidental learning which happens when they listen, talk, hear books read aloud, and eventually read books on their own (Read Naturally, n.d.). As they enter school, more intentional learning occurs as they are provided direct instruction in learning new words.
Receptive
Receptive language is the ability to understand what is being communicated in various ways. Some of the skills associated with receptive language include "following simple to multistep instructions, understanding vocabulary words, answering comprehension questions, or making inferences" (Wallace, 2020). Receptive language is often learned quicker which is why a person's receptive vocabulary is often stronger than expressive vocabulary.
Expressive
Expressive language is speaking, writing and gestures to communicate thoughts and feelings. Expressive language skills include accurately using vocabulary words, using appropriate grammar and using proper sentence structure (Wallace, 2020).
The goal of vocabulary instruction is to ensure students can effectively communicate their thoughts and feelings and comprehend spoken and written language. Incidental and intentional vocabulary learning support students reading development and comprehension (Read Naturally, n.d.). Explicit vocabulary instruction supports students ability to understand and recall the meanings of new words. Frequent exposure to words also increases the ability for students to remember new words and their meanings and students are also more likely to use them (Butler, et al., 2010). Students require instructional opportunities that provide them the opportunity to develop vocabulary, meaningful connections to words, and strategies for them to understand words in context (Butler, et al., 2010). Vocabulary development is essential as student's progress from elementary to upper grades and require a more robust vocabulary in various subject areas.
Semantic Mapping - Students use a map of words to make connections between words to develop a better understanding of vocabulary and its relation to words or concepts.
Sketch the Word - Students draw an image that builds a connection between the word and something personal to them.
Use Context Clues - Students use the surrounding words in a text to help them determine the meaning of an unknown word.
Student-Friendly Definitions - Provide explanations about the word in terms that are easily understood and relatable while also providing examples of how it is frequently used.
Analyze Word Parts - Explicit instruction in word parts teaches students to use root words and affixes to help them understand new vocabulary they may come across while reading.
Step 1: Explain - The new word is introduced by the teacher in student friendly terms.
Step 2: Restate - Students restate the information the teacher provided in their own words by recording it in their journal.
Step 3: Show - Students create a visual representation of the word.
Step 4: Discuss - Students engage in structured discussions to expand their knowledge of the word.
Step 5: Refine and Reflect - Students use discussions to continue to refine their original notebook entries.
Step 6: Apply in Learning Games - Use games to practice vocabulary terms.

Vocabulary Knowledge Scale - Students are provided a list of vocabulary words and rate each word based on how well they know them. If a student checks that they know the word well, they can provide a meaning of the word. If they check that they have heard or seen the word before, they could write what they know about the word. This informal assessment provides the teacher information on which words to continue focusing on to develop a stronger understanding and which words students have mastered.
Vocabulary Recognition Task - Students are given about 25 words and they need to read and recognize which words are related to a unit of study. After circling the words that were from the unit, students then sorted the words on a web into categories provided by the teacher.
