This list of Christmas carols is organized by language of origin. Originally, a "Christmas carol" referred to a piece of vocal music in carol form whose lyrics centre on the theme of Christmas or the Christmas season. The difference between a Christmas carol and a Christmas popular song can often be unclear as they are both sung by groups of people going house to house during the Christmas season. Some view Christmas carols to be only religious in nature and consider Christmas songs to be secular.[1]

In which I attempt to boil several thousand Christmas songs in my library down to their purest essence - for no apparent reason other than dorks like me like making lists and dorks like you like reading them. And, as long as we're being honest, lists like these are subjective in the extreme; this is little more than what I like, and there's no scientific proof that these are "the best." Why are any of these songs better than, say, Joe Turner's cool "Christmas Date Boogie"? Hard to say, but I think they are (barely).

All the same, my selections aren't random, and I bring a lot of experience and knowledge to the table. I cast my net broadly, choosing as many different artists and song titles as possible. But, as should be evident throughout Hip Christmas, I am biased in favor of loud, fast, and catchy music. So, despite my interest in jazz, lounge, and reggae music, for instance, there's little of it below. For instance, I excluded (with great reluctance) standards by Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, and my beloved Carpenters. Nevertheless, I ended up with 100 songs I can recommend without reservation to folks who want to rock, roll, boogie, swing, jump, and/or jive their way through Christmas. Got yer own list? The rest of the list is based on what I intuitively believe would appeal to the most people, with the top 10 being ready for airwaves across these great United States Stevens once planned to praise with individual concept albums. That was a simpler time.

I know I said I sorted this list out by what I believe would appeal to the most people. But rules are meant to be broken sometimes. This is probably the craziest cover of this song, and doing a 180-degree turn right after the more reserved "Angels We Have Heard on High" on Volume 8 is why I gave it such a high ranking.

Prior to figuring that "star of wonder" was a reference to the Christmas star that led the Three Wise Men to baby Jesus, I kept envisioning this as a song about two people lost in space and finding each other. The lyrics are still a little too cryptic to unpack. But this song's biggest draw for me is the production. You'd think this track involved about 15 to 20 people, but the credits reveal it was four. Most of the luscious sound came from Stevens playing 11 different instruments himself. Even though it's not that amazing of a feat (everyone does multitrack recording these days), "Star of Wonder's" sound in the last half overwhelms me every time I listen to it.

Real talk: I get choked up almost every time I listen to this song. It's probably because of "Barcarola's" sad, slow melody (a barcarola is a folk tune sung by gondoliers, distinct for sounding and feeling like you're riding a gondola, and boy, this boat ride sure is slow.)

Stevens didn't produce all these songs alone; he had his friends by his side from the first album to the 10th. "Christmas in the Room," his best Christmas song, is a thank you to that community, from family to fellow musicians to fans.

I don't know how to stop Christmas songs from being played on my iphone. I have no downladed Christmas music but everytime I listen to an artist a Christmas song is played right after it.Help this is so annoying:(

I have logged out of everything, changed passwords repeatedly, and even deleted all Christmas music playlists...still, I get one song from my chosen playlist (doesn't matter if it's my playlist or a Spotify playlist) then the next song - and every song after - is Christmas. e24fc04721
