Beginning in March, my student assistants and I began reorganizing the Kawameeh Middle School fiction collection by genre. This initiative was originally planned as a two- to three-year project. Because we began this mid-year without the ability to purchase new supplies, we prioritized genres for which we already had sufficient labeling materials.
Using a Genre Collection Report from Follett, students were actively involved in all aspects of developing the new sections. Under my guidance, they:
Pulled books from the shelves, working one genre at a time
Applied genre labels to each book
Used the cataloging system to batch-edit shelf locations to reflect new genre designations
Created and organized each genre section
Once students pulled the books for each genre, I condensed the remaining collection to create space for the new sections.
We successfully completed the Humor, Horror, Dystopian, and Romance sections before the project was paused due to the planned closure of all school libraries for the upcoming 2026-27 academic year.
