Students present at the 35th Annual Saint Joseph’s University Sigma Xi Student Research Symposium

We are excited to present our first research results at this year’s Sigma Xi Symposium held at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. Nicole, Anna, Julia, and Monyca presented their poster titled “From Pollution to Potential: Microbial Diversity and Distribution in Acid Mine Drainage in Pennsylvania,” while Daud, Tariq, and Julianna from Dr. Manuel Tripepi’s group presented their poster titled “The Taxonomical Abundance and Distribution of Turf-Based Athletic Fields.”

New publication out!

At the beginning of the month, our new work on Atacama subsurface granitic bedrock microbiomes was published in ISME Communications. In this work, we explored microbial communities in granitic subsurface rocks beneath arid and humid climates in Chile. We identified unique chemolithoautotrophic taxa in the arid subsurface and showed that surface climate shapes nutrient availability and metabolic strategies in deep subsurface ecosystems.

This work was carried out at GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences and led by Lucas Horstmann.

New publication out!

Good start to the new year!

Our work investigating the impact of anthropogenic activities on microbial populations in a unique tropical lake ecosystem in Indonesia has been published in FEMS Microbiology. This dataset, combined with previously published geochemical data, provides novel insights into the rapidly developing Lake Sentani region by investigating river and lake sediment samples. Great work lead by Sulung Nomosatryo and Jens Kallmeyer at GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences

A new paper at the end of year!

Excited to share that our study investigating microbial populations in the seismically active, high CO2 Eger Rift subsurface region got published in Environmental Microbiome. Some very interesting research conducted at GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences
