There I was, sitting in the middle of my hydrogeology class, when I heard it. Though the noise was faint, I immediately knew what had happened: the toilet flushing in the bathroom across the hall sounded exactly like the Nittany Lion.

The cantilevered tensile structure shades the audience during the sea lion shows surrounding the 39,000-gallon transparent pool. In addition to 600 yards of fabric weather protection, the client requested a design with artistic flare that would be dramatically striking and provide an amazing atmosphere for guests to enjoy.The installation was very complex due to the entire fabric membrane being set in one piece and the small restricted area surrounding the arena to maneuver our equipment. Our installation team used two man lifts and two 55 ton cranes to place the fabric in the arena for attachment to the posts. Extensive engineering precision was involved in the overall installation. Our goal was to ensure audience comfort during the shows and the tensile structure definitely provides ample shade, wind and rain protection.

While the zoo has had a sea lion basin since 1919, the new facilities will allow visitors closer contact and greater access to the animals. The natural exhibit, called the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Sea Lion Landing, is modeled after the Pacific Coast with varying depths, plants, and rocky structures. The outdoor pool also contains a shallow beach area for sunbathing, feeding and training.

This summer was an exciting one for the sea lions at St. Louis Zoo! On June 30, 2012, a new, state-of-the-art PGAV-designed exhibit and amphitheater was officially opened after years of design and construction--on the very spot of their old exhibit. Located in what is referred to as the 'Historic Basin', Sea Lion Sound anchors the core of the zoo, right at the major crossroads for north-south circulation and the eastern spur. The exhibit was the first to be completed from the most recent master plan also completed by PGAV.Below is a fly-through video of the Sea Lion Sound original design.

The $18 million project features a large exhibit with both underwater and overwater views, a large open-air, shaded amphitheater and show pool (complete with sea lion slide!), holding facilities and underground LSS yard. Exhibit viewing is completely unique to sea lion exhibits in the United States, and features a 23 foot tall flat panel as well as the crown jewel, a 35 foot long acrylic tunnel. The show pool is also fronted in acrylic to allow both underwater and overwater enjoyment.

RMB: Right now there are 10 California Sea Lions and 1 Harbor Seal. 3 of the Sea Lions were born at the STL Zoo. It was designed to accommodate 10-15 sea lions. {Steve Bircher, curator, says the zoo may adopt or breed sea lions in the future, but has no plans to take in any additional seals.}

RMB: Water Conservation is probably the biggest. Originally the old exhibit was a dump and fill pool. The new system filters the water rather than replacing it. {Dr. Jeffrey Bonner, Zoo President, recently stated that since the species of sea lions and seals living in this exhibit are not endangered, he believes this exhibit to be more about educating guests about the animals rather than about conservation.}

The Sea Lion Sound pinniped exhibit includes an exhibit pool, amphitheater with show pool, and back-of-house with pools. Support areas for this exhibit include life support systems for the animals as well as staff support and indoor training areas. The new exhibit facilities keep the California sea lions on the same prominent site at the foot of Historic Hill.

The new facility combines the once separated sea lion show facilities with the sea lion management facility and exhibit area. It greatly simplifies animal care, training and transfer and allows trainers a support area and indoor medical pool. There is a back-of-house outdoor pool where animals that are off display can exercise. The various display and holding pools comprise 939 m (248 000 gallons) of temperature controlled saltwater that is filtered at a central location.

A major feature of the exhibit is an underwater experience that invites visitors to 'dive' with the sea lions. A rockwork themed tunnel with interpretive exhibits leads to an underwater walk-through where visitors cross through the pool in an acrylic tunnel.

Overwater viewing towards the north end of this tunnel is laid out to maximize viewing opportunities. Visitors get views of sea lions swimming and hauling-out for sun and rest, as well as during feeding demonstrations. An outdoor dining area overlooks the exhibit, encouraging visitors to take some time and observe.

Sea Lion Sound was conceived based on the overarching theme: By having fun with sea lions, the guests will love them and know that the zoo cares for them. This theme is carried forward through interpretive graphic messages and interactives, live interpretation by education interpreters and docents, and keeper and trainer presentations at feedings, trainings, and the Sea Lion Show.

Interpreters and docents emphasize the playful aspects of sea lions, engaging in conversations and discovery experiences with guests, based on what the sea lions are doing, and interpreting the many aspects of their care. Keeper and trainer presentations focus on training, enrichment, and other aspects of their husbandry while using a playful approach.

The life support system is fully automated to report on mechanical and water quality issues and can be monitored and adjusted remotely. The ozone system has detectors with both lighted and audible alarms sounding in the event of a leak. Appropriate emergency equipment and training related to ozone emergencies has been provided to life support staff.

The zoo participates in the Marine Mammal Taxon Advisory Group (TAG) and Species Survival Plan (SSP) programs for both Sea Lion Sound species. In addition to five resident sea lions, another 3.2 sea lions were brought in to bring new genetic diversity to the zoo population and a single 0.1 harbor seal to provide species diversity. During scheduled public feedings and shows, the harbor seal is used to show the differences between a seal and sea lion.

I work with clients to take studio, home, and live recordings to the next level.

I've been making music with indie, rock, country, and americana artists in Nashville for over 10 years. I'm fortunate that the groups I've tracked or mixed are always looking to build their own unique sounds. Some projects record with bandmates live in the studio and some artists track each instrument individually in their home studio. Regardless of how the music was recorded I'm going to make sure that the excitement and energy of your songs will stand out.

John did the mix and master of our whole debut album! The album sounds amazing. John made every song sound like we wanted.

More, he taught us so many things about recording and mixing.

One of the cool side of this journey crafting this album was working with John!

A: I'm mostly doing mixing/mastering these days but one project I'm proud of was at a studio called the Castle, which is just south of Nashville. I got to have a creative engineering role with a friend's band that focused on the guitar sounds of the record. I brought my equipment and was able to help select the guitar, pedals, cab, mic, etc. for most of the tunes. The band recorded all together but with the drums in a separate room. I was in control of the pedalboard in realtime during the performance, adjusting the settings of the overdrive, tremolo, delay, and reverb during the songs.. sometimes to wild affect. While doing something unusually bizarre mid-take I'd often glance up into the control room to see smiling and two thumbs up from my friend producing. When ended up with several layers of guitar, not all of which made it onto the record but during mixing there were plenty of inspired options to choose from. It was fun because I was able to specilize my skills and I like creative approaches to recording and mixing that feel like practical innovation.. rather than trying to reinvent the wheel just to do something unique.

A: What are your goals? Where do you want this material to be heard.. streaming, radio, cd? Of the songs you're sending over which one is your favorite? Are you relatively happy with the rough mixes or do the songs still need some work to be fully developed? What artists or bands have a sound that inspire you and this record?

A: Don't track your songs too hot! If the files I get are overcooked and clipping when it comes to me it requires a more creative approach to getting a good finished product. Other than that I tell people to take chances and go for the sound you're looking for on the way in.

The loudest insect in the world! Using their singing voices to attract mates, the green grocer cicada can produce sounds that are in excess of 120 dB. These sounds can travel up to a mile. The insect uses a drum in their stomach along with the contraction of their internal muscles to produce the sounds. When the insects group together, they can confuse birds with their mating song.

Bats use ultrasonic echolocation to navigate and hunt. They emit sound, and use the vibrations of it bouncing back to paint a sound map of their surroundings. The loudest member of the bat family, the bulldog bat can produce sounds exceeding 140 dB, although these sounds are out of our hearing range.

I read an article about percussion, where a percussion instrument called "Lion's Roar" was mentioned, which is said to be an instrument that resembles the sound of a lion roaring. I think that would be a very dramatic and exciting effect to use in compositions, but I couldn't find any information about the instrument. Does anybody know more about it?

Steve Bryant's piece Loose Id for orchestra contains a Lions roar.His website is www.stevenbryant.com i think, and he has his pieces on the site where you can listen to the lions roar for yourself. Though its sorta hard to find when you don't know sound to look for. 006ab0faaa
