Given the multidisciplinary nature of neuroscience, we connect peers with diverse academic and cultural backgrounds to together develop a comprehensive view of the field. Since 2020, this has been the mission at the heart of NeuroConnect, an international online journal club focused on deepening our understanding of neuroscience and developing critical scientific reading skills. Meeting biweekly, we engage with both recent and landmark neuroscience research articles, including those awarded Nobel Prizes. Before taking a brief hiatus and undergoing some modifications, our club successfully gathered over 150 members from across more than 16 countries, with members coming from a wide range of backgrounds such as biology, engineering, medicine, and ethics. Now, we're excited to announce the relaunch of our journal club, featuring an updated format designed to enrich our exploration of neuroscience even further!
At each meeting, we will review the content of the articles (background, rationale, hypothesis, experimental design, figures, conclusions), consider implications, and talk about any points of interest! Therefore, having a moderate understanding of the nervous system and some experience with reading primary research articles is recommended. Successful discussions rely on every member, so please acknowledge that this journal club will require some time commitment. Additionally, please make sure you have a functional microphone as verbal discussion is the main component of the meetings.Â
Schedule
Meetings will take place at 5pm GMT (1pm EDT) on alternating Fridays over the course of two months. Each meeting will each be about 1-2 hours long. You can also find both the meeting and paper links conveniently located in our Google Calendar. Please read the corresponding article(s) prior to the meeting and come prepared with any questions you may have about it.
Meeting Platform
Meetings will occur through Google Meets. You are encouraged to turn on your camera! You can contribute either by unmuting and speaking or via chat message.
Certificate Requirements
We will provide a certificate at the end of the two-month session if you meet all of the requirements. In order to earn a certificate at the end of the 2-month session, you must attend at least 3 out of the 4 meetings for your group and be an active participant, meaning that you must contribute at least twice per meeting (via text or by unmuting). If you cannot attend a meeting, let us know in advance via email! (link.neuroscience@gmail.com).
