John and Greg have taught PE at Lingfield College for the last three years, so they already know students from the school very well! They started LCFC in the summer of 2023 firstly because they love to coach football, and secondly because they saw a gap in the local area, especially for girls’ football, where it was difficult to find a training camp for Greg's two daughters and John's granddaughter to attend.

The camp has gone from strength to strength since 2023 and both lead coaches are really proud of the work they do, and enjoy it immensely!

Lingfield students will know the coaches as ‘Mr Mell’ and ‘Mr Marsh’ but at the camp we can be less formal and be known by our first names 😎

John Marsh

UEFA qualified coach. First Aid, Safeguarding Children and Young People (Lingfield College) trained.

As a young footballer, I represented England at Under 12 and Under 13 level. In my late teens, my opportunity to join the Arsenal youth set up was cut short by a severe injury. My playing career was restricted and I took up coaching. I went on to travel Europe gathering coaching experience at various clubs, Ajax and Malmo amongst them, all of which culminated in acquiring the UEFA B licence way back in the mid 70’s. I continued to play football at a semi-professional level. I allowed my B license to expire after becoming a full time Primary School teacher nearly thirty years ago. I went on to become the head teacher of a large primary school in South East London before I retired from full time teaching in 2021. I am still a qualified football coach and enjoy teaching as a part time sports coach at Lingfield Prep.

Greg Mell

BSc Psychology and Sports Coaching, PGCE Primary Physical Education. FA qualified coach. Mental Health First Aid trained. First Aid For Sport Qualified, Safeguarding Children and Young People (both Lingfield College and NHS) trained.

My full-time job is working as a Tobacco Dependence Lead, but I also teach PE at Lingfield College Prep on Wednesdays and Thursday afternoons. I have worked in sport for 20 years, first travelling the world working on cruise ships as a sports coach before becoming a full-time football coach in Mexico. I went on to become a PE teacher at an international school in Mexico City where I progressed to become Head Coach of Football and later Director of School Sports in Cancun. I now live in sunny East Grinstead with my wife and two daughters (and two cats)! I love many sports but football is my favourite, my team is Liverpool! Fun fact: Can also coach in Spanish! I really enjoy working with students of any level - helping them to improve and enjoy their sport.

Depending on the size of the group attending camp, we will bring in sufficient DBS-checked assistant staff so that we always comply with the recommended staff/student ratios and safeguarding regulations of both the FA and Lingfield College.
