Item description: Approximately 6 in long strip of red thermoplastic at 1/12" thickness heated and formed around clients golf club with attached velcro for securing around clients thumb with Dycem strips inside to improve grip.
I chose to take on this project to provide a device the client would find beneficial to improve participation in the leisure occupation of golf. He was a client that has been receiving treatment from the OTA students at SLCC for the past many months.
Poster Reflection
My poster, "Golf Club Gripper," was displayed near the grand ballroom. It showcased a collaborative effort between my client and me. This experience highlighted the importance of integrating client needs into design and the impact these devices can have on quality of life.
The Golf Club Gripper was created out of necessity. My client, who enjoys golfing, struggled with grip due to high tone, which made it hard for his thumb to stay in the correct position. This limitation effected his participation in the sport. Using thermoplastic, Dycem, and Velcro, I developed a device that provided the support he needed. Seeing our ideas and my work come to life was incredibly rewarding.
While presenting, I felt excited to share the Gripper with other occupational therapy practitioners. However, I thought the half-hour time frame was too short for people to explore the devices. Overlapping class schedules reduced the number of attendees. Still, I valued the conversations I had with those who did stop by.
Showcasing my adaptive device was a highlight of the project. I believe it can help individuals gain independence, which is the main reason I chose this profession. Finding tools that improve grip is essential for a large variety of clients. Engaging with my peers sparked ideas on how to adapt the Gripper for broader use, deepening my desire to improve the device.
This experience was more than a chance to present; it was a moment of professional growth. It encouraged me to embrace creativity in problem-solving and consider how I can adapt my designs for wider use. Ultimately, the Golf Club Gripper represents collaboration, creativity, and the spirit of occupational therapy.
OT Promotion Project
Provide support for neurodivergent children and their caregivers
Promote benefits of working with an OTP
advocate for more inclusivity within communities
A small group from my cohort and I came together to promote occupational therapy to a much needed audience. After some collaboration on the details of the assignment we narrowed in on a group to focus our assignment on. We concluded who our intended audience would be and by which method we would promote OT.
We decided on promoting OT with the intent to educate the neurodivergent population. We felt strongly about providing information and strategies to parents and OT practitioners who could benefit from the information we had to share. These individuals were our primary target.
We created 5 pages of information about the benefits of utilizing OT and incorporating their skillful strategies when treating those of the neurodivergent population. We then posted this information onto multiple social media platforms. The feedback received about our information was positive. One lady stated how cute the posts were and how usefu it was to her as an OT practitioner. She planned to use it to promote her business as a pediatric OT.
We used assertive, direct, simple language to attract a wide variety of people about the many benefits of utilizing OT for those involved in the neurodivergent community, including OT practitioners. Much fo the public is till unaware of OT and/or what they do specifically. For this reason, it is important to continue advocacy for ourselves so families, individuals and communities can bear witness of the positive effects. Advocacy, education and effective communication is an important and integral part of the OT pragram. This assignment is evident of that.
