Indigenous Epidemic, 2019
Indigenous Epidemic, 2019
As of May 2021:
84% of Native women have experienced violence in their lifetime.
86% of Native women who were sexually assaulted are assaulted by individuals of other races.
5,712 cases of MMIWG2 were reported in 2016. Only 116 were logged in the Department of Justice database.
And more statistics can be found here.
As an indigenous woman, the MMIWG2 crisis is always on the forefront of my thoughts. I think of all the families impacted by the violence my people face and how most of my sisters have experienced violence.
I mourn for the loss of life and innocence. I want to acknowledge those women, girls, and two-spirit individuals, as well as their families, for the injustices placed upon them.
