Grant scheme for volunteer projects supporting historic designed landscapes

As National Volunteers Week 2023 comes to an end, we are thrilled to let you know that the Gardens Trust Community Grant scheme is open for applications again this year.

This grant is intended to help seed fund volunteer projects that will support historic designed landscapes in the UK – we hope it will be of particular help to the County Gardens Trusts. Following the success of last year’s scheme, we are delighted to be able to increase the Gardens Trust Community Grant pot in 2023 to £3500.

The application process is intentionally as simple as possible, as we are keen that this is an inclusive and accessible scheme.

The criteria are:

The applicant must be a volunteer group. It does not have to be a registered charity but does need to be able to demonstrate that it is an active group with a clear plan.

The project can be any activity relating to historic designed landscapes.

We are particularly looking for something that will act as seed-funding/pump priming for a sustainable activity. For example, an application to fund a restoration plan, Friends group set-up costs, research project, or volunteer training scheme.

The project can be based anywhere in the United Kingdom.

We particularly encourage applications that reflect Gardens Trust priorities around conservation, sharing knowledge, and encouraging inclusive participation and enjoyment of historic designed landscapes.

To apply, please complete the attached application and guidance and return it to catherine.ford@thegardenstrust.org by 15th October 2023. We will notify applicants whether they have been successful in mid-November.

Update on the progress of the new garden of the Deans Green at Lincoln Cathedral

Lincoln Cathedral Connected was awarded £16m by the Heritage Lottery Fund to improve the Cathedral’s setting and visitor experience. The funds have been used for important conservation work to the Cathedral, landscaping of Deans Green to create a new outdoor space and the development of a new visitor centre that includes an exhibition gallery, café and shop.

It is believed that these will be open to the public from March 2021
