My journey as the Chief Orientation Group Leader for AISS's Sec 1 Orientation in 2021
As the Chief Orientation Group Leader (Chief OGL), I undertook the responsibility of orchestrating all aspects of OGL training and collaborated closely with teachers and EXCO members to organize the allocation of manpower for each Sec 1 class, ensuring that every OGL was well-prepared for their role during the two Orientation days. OGLs play a pivotal role in welcoming and familiarizing new students with the school, making the coordination of this role all the more crucial. As a part of the EXCO team, we maintained consistent communication, holding weekly meetings to keep each sub-committee (games, OGL, aesthetics) well-informed about progress. This level of coordination was essential to ensure that all aspects of the event were adequately addressed and that everyone understood their roles and responsibilities.
The primary challenge we encountered during the planning process revolved around the COVID-19 outbreak. Due to the pandemic, our usual practice of involving senior students in the training camp was no longer feasible. Consequently, we had to create all the training materials and content from scratch to equip the OGLs with the necessary skills and knowledge. Additionally, COVID-19 posed challenges in allocating OGLs, comprising Student Councilors and Outdoor Leaders, to their respective classes in an equitable manner.
Our team displayed remarkable resilience and determination, navigating the difficulties with unwavering commitment. To prepare the OGLs effectively, we conducted rehearsals in advance, ensuring that all training materials and content were comprehensive and meticulously organized. Enthusiasm and energy were paramount as OGLs needed to be motivated and energetic to lead the Sec 1s. Close collaboration with Council teachers and the Games Team was crucial in ensuring that OGLs grasped instructions and could facilitate the games seamlessly.
This experience provided valuable lessons in planning, effective communication, and teamwork. Despite the evident challenges, including planning for training and allocating OGLs to their respective Sec 1 classes, we thrived as a team, overcoming obstacles, and stepping out of our comfort zones. It underscored the significance of adaptability and perseverance, as well as the value of strong communication and teamwork in successfully executing complex projects.
My journey as the Overall In Charge for AISS's Teacher's Day in 2021
Given my role as the Vice-President of the Student Council, I assumed the crucial role of Overall-In Charge (OIC) for the Teacher's Day Celebration. This encompassed close coordination with Council teachers and EXCO members to meticulously plan the sequence of events for Teacher's Day and delegate specific responsibilities to each committee. My task was to ensure that each committee remained on track and that all the essential elements for each segment were thoughtfully prepared.
The unique challenge we faced this year was the impact of COVID-19, which prevented us from conducting the Teacher's Day celebration live in the school hall, as we had in previous years. Due to safe management measures, we had to devise innovative ideas and strategies to execute the event successfully.
Through extensive discussions with teachers and fellow EXCO members, we devised a plan to conduct certain segments of the celebration live in the dance studio while pre-recording other segments. This approach ensured that the event remained engaging and dynamic. The theme, 'Teachers, you're our superheroes!' guided the celebration, which revolved around three main components: Games, Decoration, and Gifts. Additional segments included a video from the Parent Support Group, as well as videos prepared by the Student Body and various CCA groups. We had the challenge of integrating these segments seamlessly within the stipulated time duration of the event.
After a month of concerted effort, which involved meticulous planning, creative decoration, filming, extensive editing, and rigorous rehearsals, we successfully executed the event. The Teacher's Day Celebration went off without a hitch, thanks to the dedication of our emcees and the effective collaboration among the entire crew. I believe many teachers found the day enjoyable and left with special memories.
This experience offered invaluable insights into event planning and execution. I came to realize that planning an event is a complex undertaking that requires thorough pre-planning. We had to establish a clear theme, allocate tasks, create a timeline, and choreograph the flow of events. Subsequently, filming and editing were essential, followed by extensive rehearsals to ensure everything ran smoothly. This experience enhanced my event management skills and left me more confident about leading and executing future events.
My journey as the Overall In Charge for the planning and execution for the successful implementation of the project in 2021
The core objective of the 'Pass It On' Project was to facilitate the transfer of pre-loved and useful items to individuals who would benefit from them. This collaborative initiative was a joint effort between the Student Council and the Green Service Club, aiming to establish a dedicated space where both students and teachers could deposit items such as assessment books, storybooks, and various other educational materials. Importantly, the project allowed students and teachers to freely access this space to acquire items without the obligation of returning them.
Fortunately, the 'Pass It On' project unfolded relatively smoothly, presenting few significant challenges in both the planning and execution phases. I attribute this to my prior experience in launching projects, stemming from my one-year tenure as the Head of Student Voice.
Nevertheless, there were hurdles that we had to navigate. Our tasks extended beyond the creation of a dedicated space. We needed to promote the project throughout the school and encourage students to donate their pre-loved items. This entailed various simultaneous activities, including the creation of a Google Form to gauge the Student Body's reaction to the project, producing promotional videos, designing posters, and sourcing the necessary materials for constructing the dedicated space. These tasks collectively generated immense pressure and stress that I had to overcome.
However, with unwavering support from my dedicated team members and fellow EXCO members, I successfully maintained a positive outlook and persevered in the face of mounting pressure. Together, we surmounted these challenges and constructed a space that we could proudly introduce to the school community.
This project provided invaluable lessons on the importance of teamwork and perseverance. It became evident that without the continuous support of my team members, who shared the burdens of the project, as well as the assistance of my fellow EXCO members, I would not have been able to effectively manage the multifaceted tasks simultaneously. This experience bolstered my mental fortitude and significantly enhanced my project management skills, thereby better preparing me for the efficient execution of future projects with the same degree of dedication and effectiveness.
Let's collectively work towards a more sustainable lifestyle and a greener Earth! 🌍
Insights into the preparation of the Student Council Investiture in 2020 & 2021
The Student Council Investiture serves as a formal ceremony that symbolizes the transition from the 18th Student Council to the 19th Student Council. As part of the 19th Student Council's Executive Committee (EXCO), our role was to collaborate closely with the outgoing 18th EXCO to plan and execute the investiture smoothly, ensuring a seamless handover of responsibilities.
This event marked a significant milestone for me as the Head of the Student Voice Committee within the 19th Student Council. My responsibilities included coordinating the filming of our Committee Intro, an aspect of the investiture that I found to be more challenging than expected. As a novice in this role, I initially struggled to lead my committee and capture the intended shots effectively. Although the task appeared relatively straightforward, ensuring a seamless transition between members proved to be more complex than I had anticipated, particularly given my limited experience in coordinating such activities.
Fortunately, the guidance and support of my senior were invaluable in successfully completing the filming. The overall structure of the Student Council Investiture encompassed multiple segments, including Farewell Videos for the outgoing seniors, Committee Introductions, EXCO Introductions, and the Pledge Taking. With collaborative planning alongside the 20th EXCO, we successfully executed the investiture, even though there remained room for potential enhancements in certain aspects.
As I reflected on the experience, I gained a deeper appreciation for the intricacies involved in seemingly straightforward tasks such as filming committee members. It highlighted the significance of factors like maintaining consistent distances between the tripod and members, the framing of shots, and the choice of background. This experience was instrumental in my growth and development as I actively contributed to the planning and execution of a significant school event. It taught me to consider various details to ensure a cohesive and well-executed ceremony.
