Sotheby's Institute of Art Summer Program

A two-week summer program I did at Sotheby's Institute of Art that had a lasting impact on my view of the art market...

Museums, Galleries, Auction House

I had three different teachers for this course, and all of them offered great professional insights into these areas of art careers. We also had the opportunity to talk to people working in individual galleries, Sotheby's, and Artsy. The course was a great introduction to the complex art world with many readings, lectures, and conversations. It also introduced many art sources like news sites and books I was previously oblivious about!

My Final Project- Sales Plan Pitch as a Sotheby's Auction Specialist

So many little things learned about these fascinating areas of art: I learned that you have to enter the right side of museums because it'll be really hard to switch; that galleries (though very hard!) could be run just by one or two people; that auctioneers use more body language than I thought to encourage bidding...

The impact of this experience is lasting. I am now more than ever fascinated by the capricious art market: the fact that my Youtube home page is jammed with live auctions says a lot...
