What is a LifeStraw® ?

How Lifestraw Works

The LifeStraw® uses advanced hollow fibre technology. Water is forced through narrow fibres under high pressure. Clean water exits through tiny pores in the walls of the hollow fibres, but bacteria and other contaminants are trapped inside the hollow fibres and are flushed out by backwashing.

This is a highly efficient method of filtration.

LifeStraw Personal

LifeStraw Personal is a portable water purifier for prevention of common diarrhoeal disease. It can be carried around for easy access to safe and clean drinking water. It is just 25 cm long and 29 mm in diameter and can be hung around the neck. LifeStraw requires no electrical power or spare parts.

Info about the personal model:

It is a portable filter for personal use. It has a microfibre membrane and it now filters 4,ooo litres and will last approx. 4 years. At the end of every day it is cleaned by blowing out the turbidity that has been stopped by the filter. It contains no moveable or replaceable parts and uses no electricity nor batteries. It removes 99.9999% of Protozoan parasites and bacteria.

Dirty water enters the bottom of the Lifestraw, which then passes through the hollow fibre membrane to provide clean water.

Lifestraw Mission

This model will filter up to 18,000 litres of water enough to supply a family of five with safe drinking water for three years.

The feed bag prefilter has 3 or 5 litre capacity for filling with unpurified water. The prefilter removes coarser particles and is easy to clean. The plastic hose is one metre long and gravity creates sufficient pressure on the membrane ultrafilter in order to reach a high flow rate. The blue tap is turned to release purified water.

Backwashing of the membranes is done by squeezing the red bulb three times and releasing the dirty water from the red tap

NOTE: Water from the red exit tap should never be consumed

Lifestraw Community Model

This model will filter 100,000 litres over a 3 year period. It has a 25 litre top dirty water container and a 25 litre clean water reservoir with 4 draw off taps.

The filtration rate is up to 12 litres/hour.

It has its important daily cleaning routine, a large red handle (shown on picture) which is pulled down and the filtered contaminants are discharged into the large red container.
