If families feel like their time is well spent and that their participation and efforts are making a difference, they will be more likely to continue to participate!
Share Results and Impact:
Ensure that families see or hear the results of the projects or events that are planned.
Send a follow-up email after the event with a summary,
Discuss the event during a LICC meeting, or
Host a community cafe or panel discussion where community members can openly share their thoughts and observations about the event.
Respect and Value Members:
Treat family members just like every other professional on the LICC, not as a token.
Respect their knowledge and ideas,
Value their creativity, insight, and lived experience.
Family leadership is something that can look different for each family. Some families may feel that leadership is simply attending IEP meetings on behalf of their children. For others, it may mean speaking in front of Congress. As an LICC, you can build family capacity by encouraging them to attend trainings and educational opportunities to learn about the different aspects of leadership and engagement. There are many organizations in NC that offer opportunities and we encourage you to point families in their direction to help not only families, but your community as well.
