13. BRITISH MEALS

Breakfast

Generally speaking the English breakfast is much bigger than in other countries. The Typical breakfast is quite a large meal for the morning! It normally consists of a cup of tea, Jam, milk, coffee, butter, toast or fried bread, bacon, eggs, sausages, fried tomatoes, baked beans and orange juice! Cereals are also very popular; the most common are cornflakes. Of course not everybody eats so much in the morning. Many people just eat toast and marmalade with tea or coffee.

Packed lunch

Lunch is the midday meal. It is usually just a sandwich, a packet of crisps, an apple and a can of something to drink. You can take it with you when you go to school or work because even though factories and schools have canteens where it is possible to eat, the so called “packed lunch” is the most practical and common thing to eat. Generally it is kept in a plastic container.

Dinner Time

The most typical dinner is a cooked meal which consists of fish or salad or meat accompanied by vegetables and covered with a sauce made with the juice of the cooked meat. It is usually followed by a sweet course . A recent survey says that for dinner many women don’t always cook because they work outside the home. They often choose frozen or canned food and, sometimes , precooked dishes.

Tea Time

If you think of tea, maybe England comes to your mind immediately. After all Britain has a long tea tradition that comes back to the 18th century .Even though it’s good at any time of day, most British people have a tea break in the afternoon.

The United Kingdom is one of the world's greatest tea consumers per capita. In Britain, the drinking of tea is so varied that it is quite hard to generalise. While it is usually served with milk, it is not uncommon to drink it black or with lemon and sugar. Strong tea is served with milk and sugar in a mug. Small cakes, biscuits and scones are generally served with the tea.
