Self-Assessment is important to do as a reader. Asking yourself questions before reading, during reading, and after reading will make you a stronger reader.
PREDICT: Determine what you think will happen in the story. Use the title, text, and illustrations to help you.
VISUALIZE: Create mental images of the characters, settings, and events in the story.
QUESTION: Stop and ask yourself questions to see if the story makes sense. Reread the text if you need more information.
CONNECT: Think about what you already know about the text. Find ways to relate the text to yourself (Text Connections are below). Find ways to relate the text to yourself, another book, the world, and media.
IDENTIFY: Determine the author's purpose. Find the important details, the main ideas, and the themes of the story.
INFER: Use clues in the story and your own knowledge to fill in the gaps and draw conclusions.
EVALUATE: Think about the story as a whole and form opinions about what you read.
